Affoltern am Albis (abbreviated as ''Affoltern a.A.''; Swiss German: ''Affoltere'') is a town and a municipality in the district of Affoltern in the canton of Zürich in Switzerland. History Affoltern is first mentioned in 1190 as ''Afiltre''. Geography Affoltern has an area of . Of this area, 45.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 28.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 25% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.5%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers, or mountains). The municipality is located west of the Albis hills in the moraine landscape around the Reuss. It was created in the 19th century through the merger of Ober- and Unteraffoltern, Zwillikon, and Loo-Fehrenbach. Affoltern im Emmental is a Municipalities of Switzerland, municipality in the districts of Switzerland, district of Trachselwald (district), Trachselwald in the Cantons of Switzerland, canton of Canton of Bern, Bern in Switzerland. History Affoltern is first mentioned in 1261/63 as ''Affolterra''. The oldest trace of a settlement in the area comes from the Middle Ages. The village church of St. Michael was first mentioned in 1275. It remained a local chapel until 1484 when Teutonic Knights Commandry (feudalism), Commandry of Sumiswald provided funding for a permanent parish priest. In 1528 Bern adopted the new faith of the Protestant Reformation and Affoltern converted. However, the Commandry retained Jus patronatus, patronage rights over the church until 1698. By the 18th century many local farmers were raising cattle for meat and milk in the rolling Emmental hills. Affoltern is a quarter in district 11 (Zürich), district 11 in Zürich, located in the Glatt Valley (German: ''Glattal''). History and demographics Affoltern was first mentioned in 870 as ''Affaltrahe'', and in the 9th century it was reigned by the St. Gallen Abbey, in the 12th/13th century by the House of Regensberg who built their ancestral seat ''Alt-Regensberg Castle, Altburg'' nearby, followed in 1468 by the city of Zürich as part of the ''Obervogtei Regensberg'' ending in 1798. Affoltern was then after a municipality of its own, having been incorporated into the city Zürich in 1934.
