Aenima (band)
Aenima is a Portuguese dark wave, rock band formed in Almada in 1997. The name of the band is a play on the Latin word ''anima'', meaning "soul". The band is notable for its guitar-based ambient sound and clear female vocals. Almada
Almada () is a city and a municipality in Portugal, located on the southern margin of the Tagus River, on the opposite side of the river from Lisbon. The two cities are connected by the 25 de Abril Bridge. The population of the municipality in 2011 was 174,030, in an area of 70.21 km2. Gothic Rock
Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The first post-punk bands which shifted toward dark music with gothic overtones include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus (band), Bauhaus, and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk. Gothic rock stood out due to its darker sound, with the use of primarily minor or bass chords, reverb, dark arrangements, or dramatic and melancholic melodies, having inspirations in gothic literature allied with themes such as sadness, nihilism, dark romanticism, tragedy, melancholy and morbidity. Rune Eriksen
Rune Eriksen (born 13 January 1975), also known by his stage name Blasphemer, is a Norwegian musician best known as the former guitarist and songwriter of black metal band Mayhem (band), Mayhem. He took his stage name from a Sodom (band), Sodom song and joined Mayhem in October 1994, before departing the band in late 2008. Eriksen founded his solo project RUÏM in 2020 and is currently a member of Aura Noir, Earth Electric, and the multinational bands Twilight Of The Gods and Vltimas, the former initially being a Bathory (band), Bathory tribute band and the latter being a supergroup with former Morbid Angel vocalist David Vincent (musician), David Vincent and drummer Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy. Carmen Susana Simões (born 8 March 1973, in Lisbon, Portugal) is a Portuguese singer and lyricist of darkwave and gothic music, characterized by a melancholic mezzo-soprano voice. Carmen began her musical career in local Gothic rock bands known as 'Poetry of Shadows' and 'Isiphilon'. In 1997, Carmen soon became the lead singer of the prestigious darkwave band Aenima. As of 2005, next to the award-winning musician Rune Eriksen, she became the vocalist for the Doom metal band Ava Inferi, where she would also participate in a Moonspell album, in 2007. Dark Wave
Dark wave, or darkwave, is a music genre that emerged from the new wave and post-punk movement of the late 1970s. Dark wave compositions are largely based on minor key tonality and introspective lyrics and have been perceived as being dark, romantic and bleak, with an undertone of sorrow. Common features include the use of chordophones such as electric and acoustic guitar, violin and piano, as well as electronic instruments such as synthesizer, sampler and drum machine. Cocteau Twins
Cocteau Twins were a Scottish rock music, rock band active from 1979 to 1997. They were formed in Grangemouth on the Firth of Forth by Robin Guthrie (guitars, drum machine) and Will Heggie (bass), adding Elizabeth Fraser (vocals) in 1981. In 1983, Heggie was replaced with multi-instrumentalist Simon Raymonde. The group earned critical praise for their ethereal, Audio signal processing, effects-laden sound and the soprano vocals of Fraser, whose lyrics often eschew any recognisable language. They pioneered the 1980s alternative rock, alternative subgenre of dream pop and helped define what would become shoegaze. Dead Can Dance
Dead Can Dance are a British-Australian band founded in Melbourne in 1981 by Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, before relocating to London the following year. The Australian music historian Ian McFarlane described Dead Can Dance's style as "constructed soundscapes of mesmerising grandeur and solemn beauty; Music of Africa, African polyrhythms, Celtic music, Gaelic folk, Gregorian chant, Middle Eastern music, mantras, and art rock."
