Adrienne Raphel
Adrienne Raphel (born 1988) is an American poet and writer. She has published works of poetry as well as a book on the history of crossword puzzles. Early life and education Raphel was born in New Jersey but grew up in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, from age ten. She attended the private school St. Johnsbury Academy, writing a puzzle pamphlet as a capstone project in her senior year in 2006. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 2010, Master of Fine Arts in poetry from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and PhD in English from Harvard University. Career Raphel has written for ''The New Yorker'', ''The Atlantic'', and ''The Paris Review''. Her first poetry collection, ''What Was It For'', was published by Rescue Press in 2017; two years before, the manuscript won the publisher's Black Box Poetry Prize contest. Her collection ''Our Dark Academia'' (2022) contains poetry and prose about modern life, including a parody Wikipedia article on what she calls "dark academia". ... National Book Festival
The National Book Festival is an annual literary festival held in Washington, D.C. in the United States; it is organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress, and was founded by Laura Bush and James H. Billington in 2001. Background In 1995, the First Lady of Texas Laura Bush (a librarian) founded the Texas Book Festival with Mary Margaret Farabee and support of Robert S. Martin, then Director and Librarian of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and other volunteers. The goal of the festival was to honor Texas authors, promote the joys of reading, and benefit the state's public libraries. The first Texas Book Festival took place in November 1996. American Crossword Puzzle Tournament
The American Crossword Puzzle Tournament (ACPT) is a crossword-solving tournament held annually in February, March, or April. Founded in 1978 by Will Shortz, who still directs the tournament, it is the oldest and largest crossword tournament held in the United States; the 2023 event set an attendance record with more than 750 competitors. For its first 30 years the contest was held at the Marriott in Stamford, Connecticut, but owing to increasing popularity, in 2008 it moved to the larger Marriott Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn, New York. In 2015, the tournament returned to Stamford. The tournament traditionally begins Friday evening with social games and a wine-and-cheese reception.
