Royal Society Of Medicine
The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) is a medical society in the United Kingdom, headquartered in London. History The Society was established in 1805 as Medical and Chirurgical Society of London, meeting in two rooms in barristers’ chambers at Gray's Inn and then moving to Lincoln's Inn Fields where it stayed for 25 years. In 1834 the Society moved to Berners Street and was granted a Royal Charter by King William IV. In 1889 under the leadership of Sir John MacAlister, a Building Committee chaired by Timothy Holmes supervised the move of the quarters of the Society from Berners Street to 20 Hanover Square. In 1905 an eleven-member committee headed by Sir Richard Douglas Powell organised the celebration of the Society's centenary. Two years later the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London came together with seventeen specialist medical societies and, with a supplementary Royal Charter granted by Edward VII, became the Royal Society of Medicine. History Of Medicine Society
Founded by Sir William Osler in 1912, the History of Medicine Society (formally "section"), at the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM), London, is one of the oldest history of medicine, History of Medicine societies in the world and is one of the four founder committees of the British Society for the History of Medicine. It covers every medical speciality and with the support from numerous notable physicians and surgeons of the time, including Sir Francis Champneys, Sir Ronald Ross and others, the first meeting on 20 November 1912 had 160 attendees. Subsequently, the society's events became regular and it continues to hold regular events at the RSM in London. Every year, undergraduate prizes are awarded in memory of the late pathologist Norah Schuster. Eponymous lectures are also held, including the Charles Edward Wallis, C. E. Jeffery Allen Marston
Jeffery Allen Marston (31 December 1831 – 31 March 1911) CB, Hon. FRCS, was Principal Medical Officer to the Indian Army and honorary surgeon to Queen Victoria and then King Edward VII. Early life Jeffery Marston was born on 31 December 1831 in Martham, Norfolk. He studied at the University of Glasgow, at Newcastle Hospital, and in London, and graduated with an M.D. from the University of St Andrews in 1854. Career Marston joined the British Army as an assistant surgeon on 10 November 1854. In 1863 he was the first to describe Mediterranean fever. In 1877 he drew up dietary guidelines for military prisons. He became Deputy Surgeons-General in 1882, became a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1887, and became a C.B. in 1887 and F.R.C.S.Eng. in 1888. He served as sanitary officer in the 1882 Egyptian Expedition and was at the Battle of Tell El Kebir.
