Adolf Paul Schulze
Adolf Paul Schulze FRSE FRMS (1840–1891) was a 19th-century German merchant and amateur optical scientist who settled in Scotland. He created the firm Schulze, Paton & Co. He was an expert on microscopes and microphotography and jointly founded the Scottish Microscopical Society. In business he was known as Paul Schulze and in microscopy he was known as Adolf or Adolph Schulze. Life He was born in Crimmitschau in Saxony (now south-east Germany) on 8 October 1840, the son of Adolph Schulze (1808–1868) and his wife, Othilie Jeannette Streit. He was educated at the Burgerschule in Crimmitschau then at Zwickau. He studied engineering at Chemnitz Polytechnic. He moved to England in 1861 and in 1866 joined his brother in a yarn business in Manchester. He moved to Glasgow in 1867 setting up premises at 79 Glassford Street but still giving his address as 38 Chorlton Street in Manchester. Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) is an award granted to individuals that the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's national academy of science and letters, judged to be "eminently distinguished in their subject". John Gray McKendrick
John Gray McKendrick FRS FRSE FRCPE LLD (12 August 1841 – 2 January 1926) was a distinguished Scottish physiologist. He was born and studied in Aberdeen, Scotland, and served as Regius Professor of Physiology at the University of Glasgow from 1876 to 1906. He was co-founder of the Physiological Society. Early life John Gray McKendrick was born in Old Machar, Aberdeen in 1841 the son of James McKendrick, an Aberdeen merchant. He was initially apprenticed as a lawyer (1855–1861) but left law to study medicine at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh before graduating in 1864 as an MB ChB. Kelvinside is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde and is bounded by Broomhill, Dowanhill and Hyndland to the south with Kelvindale and the River Kelvin to the north. It is an affluent area of Glasgow, with large Victorian villas and terraces. As with Morningside, Edinburgh, residents are sometimes said to have a " pan loaf" accent, i.e. an affected one. The River Kelvin (Scottish Gaelic: ''Abhainn Cheilbhinn'') is a tributary of the River Clyde in northern and northeastern Glasgow, Scotland. It rises on the moor south east of the village of Banton, east of Kilsyth. At almost long, it initially flows south to Dullatur Bog where it falls into a man made trench and takes a ninety degree turn flowing west through Strathkelvin and along the northern boundary of the bog parallel with the Forth and Clyde Canal. The Merchant City, a new name introduced through urban renewal by the Scottish Development Agency and the city council in the 1980s is one part of the metropolitan central area of Glasgow. It commences at George Square and goes eastwards reaching Glasgow Cross, in the centre of Glasgow, Scotland. It contains offices, flats, retail shops, restaurants, and bars. Part of the campus of the University of Strathclyde occupies the area. James Thomson Bottomley (10 January 1845 – 18 May 1926) was an Irish-born British physicist. He is noted for his work on thermal radiation and on his creation of 4-figure logarithm tables, used to convert long multiplication and division calculations to simpler addition and subtraction before the introduction of fast calculators. William Dittmar
Professor William Dittmar FRS FRSE LLD (1833 – 1892) was a German-born scientist renowned as a chemical analyst. He was based largely in Scotland. He did much analytical work on the findings from the Challenger expedition. He was the first to confirm the Principle of Constant Proportions, a theory first conjectured in 1865 by Johan Georg Forchhammer regarding the major ions of sea-water: that whilst salinity varied across the oceans, the ratios of ionic abundance remained constant. As a result, the Principle is often called "Dittmar's Principle" or "Forchhammer's Principle". His research also included calculations of the atomic weight of platinum. William Thomson, Lord Kelvin
William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, (26 June 182417 December 1907) was a British mathematician, mathematical physicist and engineer born in Belfast. Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for 53 years, he did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and did much to unify the emerging discipline of physics in its contemporary form.
