Adelbert Edward Hanna
Adelbert Edward Hanna (May 29, 1863 – February 27, 1918) was a physician and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Lanark South from 1913 to 1917 as a Conservative and Lanark from 1917 to 1918 as a Unionist Party member. He was born in Harlem, Canada West, the son of James K. Hanna and Jane Gallagher, and was educated in Athens, at McGill University and the University of Edinburgh. He practised medicine in Perth. Hanna was surgeon for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1895, he married Bessie Scott. Hanna was first elected to the House of Commons in a 1913 by-election held after the death of John Graham Haggart John Graham Haggart, (November 14, 1836 – March 13, 1913) was a Canadian politician. John Graham Haggart
John Graham Haggart, (November 14, 1836 – March 13, 1913) was a Canadian politician. Haggart served as a Member of Parliament from 1872 to 1913. This forty-year period of service in the Commons is the second-longest in Canadian history, exceeded only by Wilfrid Laurier, whose period of service (1874-1919) mostly overlaps with Haggart's. He was appointed as Postmaster General, serving in the cabinets of John A. Macdonald and John Abbott until 1892, when he switched portfolios, serving as Minister of Railways and Canals until the defeat of the Conservative government in 1896. Prior to being elected to the House of Commons, Haggart was elected Mayor of Perth, Ontario three times: in 1867, 1869 and 1871. Perth is a town in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It is located on the Tay River, southwest of Ottawa, and is the seat of Lanark County. History The town was established as a military settlement in 1816, shortly after the War of 1812. The settlement of Lanark County began in 1815. In that year "the Settlement forming on the Rideau River" as it was officially referred to (and which soon became known as "Perth Military Settlement") began to function under Military direction. The settlement was named Perth in honour of acting Governor-General Sir Gordon Drummond, whose ancestral home was Perthshire. Several townships were surveyed to facilitate the location of farms for military and other settlers; and the site of the future Town of Perth, which had been chosen as the headquarters of the Military Establishment was surveyed in 1816. Lanark South
Lanark South was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1917. It was located in the province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867 which divided the County of Lanark into two ridings: Lanark South and Lanark North. In 1882, the South Riding of Lanark was defined as consisting of the townships of Bathurst, North Elmsley, Beckwith, South Sherbrooke, North Burgess, Drummond and Montague, the Town of Perth, and the Village of Carleton Place. In 1903, the Town of Smith's Falls was added to the riding, and the Village of Carleton Place was excluded. The electoral district was abolished in 1914 when it was merged into Lanark riding.
