Adabrock Hoard
The Adabrock Hoard is a collection of Late Bronze Age artefacts deposited at Adabroc, Isle of Lewis, Scotland around 1000-800 BC. Description The artefacts comprise two bronze socketed axeheads, a spearhead, a gouge, a hammer, three razors, as well as fragments of decorated bronze vessel, two whetstones and beads of glass, amber and gold. Discovery and excavation The hoard was discovered in peat, at a depth of , by Donald Murray in May 1910, while cutting peat for fuel. The hoard was excavated by the finder, who described the artefacts as being 'all in one group, the smaller things above and the heavier below'. Status The hoard was acquired shortly after discovery by the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (now National Museums Scotland) and is accessioned as X.DQ 211-227. Barvas
Barvas (Scottish Gaelic: ''Barabhas'' or ''Barbhas'', ) is a settlement, community and civil parish on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. It developed around a road junction. The A857 and A858 meet at the southern end of Barvas. North is the road to Ness; west takes the traveller to Carloway and the West Side; south runs the road to Stornoway. Ness () is the northernmost part of the Isle of Lewis, a community consisting of about 16 villages, including Lionel, Habost, Swainbost, Cross, North and South Dell, Cross Skigersta, Skigersta, Eorodale, Adabroc, Port of Ness, Knockaird, Fivepenny and Eoropie. Port Of Ness
Port of Ness () is a village on the Isle of Lewis in the community of Ness, in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Port of Ness is within the parish of Barvas. Port of Ness is situated at the end of the A857, which runs from Stornoway. In 2014, the Ness Fishery Memorial was erected to celebrate the fishing heritage in the area and to commemorate the 96 people who lost their lives in the industry between 1835 and 1900. Harbour The harbour was constructed in the early 19th century. An enlargement was built in 1893, with a breakwater added the following year. Each year men from Ness district sail from the port to Sula Sgeir in the Atlantic Ocean in order to collect young gannet for food.
