Ackworth is a village and civil parishes in England, civil parish in the City of Wakefield, metropolitan borough of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, between Pontefract, Barnsley and Doncaster on the River Went. It has four parts: High Ackworth, Low Ackworth, Ackworth Moor Top, and Brackenhill. The 2001 census gave it a population of 6,493, which rose to 7,049 at the 2011 census. Ackworth railway station was a railway station serving Ackworth in the English county of West Yorkshire. History The station was opened in 1879 by the Swinton and Knottingley Joint Railway, which became a joint railway between the London, Midland and Scottish Railway and the London and North Eastern Railway during the Grouping of 1923. The station then passed on to the Eastern Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948. The station was closed by British Railways British Railways (BR), which from 1965 traded as British Rail, was a state-owned company that operated most rail transport in Great Britain from 1948 to 1997.
