Acero-class Gunboat
The ''Acero'' class is a ship class, class of patrol boat, patrol gunboats based on the Israel Shaldag V design that are in service with the Philippine Navy. History In 2019, the Philippine Navy raised a requirement to procure a new class of Fast Attack Interdiction Craft (FAIC) that would be missile-capable and are based on Israel's Shaldag-class patrol boat, Shaldag V patrol boat design, to replace the fast attack craft that had been retired from service. Israel Shipyards Ltd. had offered the Shaldag-class patrol boat, Shaldag V design to the Philippine Navy as early as 2016. Funding to pursue the proposal was not available until a few years afterwards. The Israeli design was proven to be more capable as an interdiction craft than the smaller Multipurpose Assault Craft, Multi-Purpose Attack Craft that were originally designed by a Taiwanese shipbuilder as a troop insertion assault boat, and modified in Philippine Navy service to be used as a small missile boat. Israel Shipyards is a large shipbuilding and repair facilities in the eastern Mediterranean. The company also operates a privately owned port in Israel. The company's facilities are located at the Kishon Port (part of the Port of Haifa complex). Facilities include a shiplift (syncrolift), capable lifting up to 3,000 tons, or length overall ships, and a -long quay with of water depth. History The company was founded in 1959 by the State of Israel to build both military and civilian ships, and to provide marine engineering upgrade, maintenance and repair services. In 1995, following years of underperformance and continued losses under state ownership, the company was privatized and sold to a group of local investors who, since 1998, have returned it to profitability.
