Acción Latina
Acción Latina is a Latino cultural nonprofit organization founded in 1970, and located in the Mission District at 2958-24th Street, San Francisco, California. They publish El Tecolote bilingual newspaper, lead the Paseo Artístico community art stroll, and operate the Juan R. Fuentes Gallery. Acción Latina hosts diverse community driven visual, literary and performing arts events. They also manage the digital archives of El Tecolote, which span 45 years of publications. The nonprofit was formed from a class group project at San Francisco State University in the 1970s. ''Latino'' ( masculine) and ''Latina'' ( feminine) as a noun refer to people living in the United States who have cultural ties to Latin America. As an adjective, the terms refer to things as having ties with Latin America. The term ''Hispanic'' usually includes Spaniards, whereas ''Latino'' as a noun often does not. The Mission District (Spanish language, Spanish: ''Distrito de la Misión''), commonly known as the Mission (Spanish language, Spanish: ''La Misión''), is a neighborhood in San Francisco, California. El Tecolote (newspaper)
El Tecolote is a free bilingual, biweekly newspaper published by the nonprofit Acción Latina, and based in San Francisco that covers the Mission District and the surrounding area for the Latino community. It is the longest running bilingual newspaper that is printed in both English and Spanish in California. The newspaper can also be read online daily. History El Tecolote can trace its roots to student activism from 1970. The newspaper began as a project in a La Raza Studies class at San Francisco State University that was created by Juan Gonzales, who wanted to try to channel more Latinos into journalism. The final project of this class was to create a bilingual newspaper in English and Spanish. The founder and first editor was Juan Gonzales. It was first printed and came out on August 24, 1970. The San Francisco Chronicle
The ''San Francisco Chronicle'' is a newspaper serving primarily the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It was founded in 1865 as ''The Daily Dramatic Chronicle'' by teenage brothers Charles de Young and Michael H. de Young. The paper is owned by the Hearst Corporation, which bought it from the de Young family in 2000. It is the only major daily paper covering the city and county of San Francisco. Chicano Art Movement
The Chicano Art Movement represents groundbreaking movements by Mexican-American artists to establish a unique artistic identity in the United States. Much of the art and the artists creating Chicano Art were heavily influenced by Chicano Movement (El Movimiento) which began in the 1960s. Chicano art was influenced by post-Mexican Revolution ideologies, Pre-Columbian art, pre-Columbian art, European painting techniques and Mexican-American social, political and cultural issues. The movement worked to resist and challenge dominant social norms and stereotypes for cultural autonomy and self-determination.
