The accession of Sri Lanka to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations began as early as 1967, making its accession process older than that of some current ASEAN members. Currently, the Sri Lankan government has yet to revive the idea. Background Malaysian invitation On August 8, 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established in Bangkok, a regional organization comprising Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines as its founding members.
