Accademia Bizantina
Ottavio Dantone (born 9 October 1960) is an Italian conductor and keyboardist (primarily harpsichord and fortepiano) particularly noted for his performances of Baroque music. He has been the music director of the Accademia Bizantina in Ravenna since 1996. Career Dantone trained at the Milan Conservatory, Conservatorio "Giuseppe Verdi" in Milan where he graduated in organ (music), organ and harpsichord. In 1985 he was awarded the Figured bass, Basso Continuo prize at the International Paris Festival and was also a laureate in the 1986 International Bruges Festival. Dantone made his debut as an opera conductor in 1999 with the first performance in modern times of Giuseppe Sarti's ''Giulio Sabino'' at the Teatro Comunale Alighieri, Teatro Alighieri in Ravenna. He made his La Scala debut in 2005 conducting Handel's ''Rinaldo (opera), Rinaldo'', and would conduct performances of the same opera at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Glyndebourne in 2011. Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 – 28 July 1741) was an Italian composer, virtuoso violinist, impresario of Baroque music and Roman Catholic priest. Regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers, Vivaldi's influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe, giving origin to many imitators and admirers. ''Serse'' (; English title: ''Xerxes''; HWV 40) is an opera seria in three acts by George Frideric Handel. It was first performed in London on 15 April 1738. The Italian libretto was adapted by an unknown hand from that by Silvio Stampiglia (1664–1725) for an earlier Xerse (Bononcini), opera of the same name by Giovanni Bononcini in 1694. Stampiglia's libretto was itself based on Xerse, one by Nicolò Minato (ca.1627–1698) that was set by Francesco Cavalli in 1654. The opera is set in Persian Empire, Persia (modern-day Iran) about 470 BC and is very loosely based upon Xerxes I of Persia. Serse, originally sung by a mezzo-soprano castrato, is now usually performed by a female mezzo-soprano or countertenor. George Frideric (or Frederick) Handel ( ; baptised , ; 23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759) was a German-British Baroque composer well-known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi, and organ concerti. Born in Halle, Germany, Handel spent his early life in Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712, where he spent the bulk of his career and became a naturalised British subject in 1727. ''Bajazet'' (; also called ''Il Tamerlano'') (RV 703) is an Italian opera in 3 acts composed by Antonio Vivaldi in 1735. Its libretto was written by Agostino Piovene. Emőke Baráth (born November 21, 1985) is a Hungarian soprano. She began her musical studies in Gödöllő, majoring in piano and cello, and then continued harp and vocal studies at thKing St. Stephen's Secondary School of Music in Budapest She began her singing studies under the direction of József Hormai. ''Il Giustino'' ''RV 717'' is a 1724 opera by Vivaldi set to a libretto by Nicolò Beregan, originally used for the 1683 opera of the same name by Giovanni Legrenzi, and also later set by Albinoni and Handel. Delphine Galou (born 1977) is a French contralto. Her vocal style allows her to perform the most virtuoso roles of the baroque repertoire. Early life and education Galou was born in Paris in 1977. Sara Mingardo (born 2 March 1961) is an Italian classical contralto who has had an active international career in concerts and operas since the 1980s.
