Absalom Greeley
Absalom Greeley (April 18, 1823 – October 28, 1885) was the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Prince Edward (provincial electoral district), Prince Edward in the 1st Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1867 to 1870. Greeley ran on the political platform of the Reform movement (pre-Confederation Canada), Reform movement; however he was thought to be a ''Yankee Tory''; a conservative with American origins in the Whig Party (United States), American Whig Party. He is also supportive of the Family Compact which is not consistent with a Reform platform. Origins Absalom Greeley is believed to have emigrated from Maine, U.S., with his parents in the early half of the 19th century. His father had been a surveyor there. Although largely self-educated, he is credited with good learning and significant intellect. His place of residence after 1881 is unknown. William Anderson (Ontario MPP)
William Anderson (April 7, 1822 – October 10, 1887) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Prince Edward in the 1st Parliament of Ontario as a Conservative member from 1870 to 1871. He was born in Ameliasburgh Township in Upper Canada in 1822, the son of an Irish immigrant. He served in the local militia, becoming captain in 1855. Anderson was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Prince Edward in 1861; he was defeated in 1863. He was elected to the provincial legislature in an 1870 by-election after Absalom Greeley resigned his seat. 1st Legislative Assembly Of Ontario
The 1st Parliament of Ontario was in session from September 3, 1867, until February 25, 1871, just prior to the 1871 general election. This was the first session of the Legislature after Confederation succeeding the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada (last session was the 8th Parliament of the Province of Canada). The 1867 general election produced a virtual tie between the Conservative Party led by John Sandfield Macdonald and the Liberal Party led informally by Archibald McKellar. Macdonald ended up securing the Premiership by leading a coalition government with the support of moderate Liberals. His Cabinet, nicknamed the Patent Combination, included two conservatives (John Carling and Matthew Crooks Cameron), a coalition Grit (Edmund Burke Wood) and two old school Baldwinite Reformers (Sandfield Macdonald himself and Stephen Richards). Whig Party (United States)
The Whig Party was a mid-19th century political party in the United States. Alongside the Democratic Party, it was one of two major parties from the late 1830s until the early 1850s and part of the Second Party System. As well as four Whig presidents (William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Millard Fillmore), other prominent members included Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Rufus Choate, William Seward, John J. Crittenden, and John Quincy Adams (whose presidency ended prior to the formation of the Whig Party). The Whig base of support was amongst entrepreneurs, professionals, Protestant Christians (particularly Evangelicals), the urban middle class, and nativists. Family Compact
The Family Compact was a small closed group of men who exercised most of the political, economic and judicial power in Upper Canada (today's Ontario) from the 1810s to the 1840s. It was the Upper Canadian equivalent of the Château Clique in Lower Canada. It was noted for its conservatism and opposition to democracy. The Family Compact emerged from the War of 1812 and collapsed in the aftermath of the Rebellions of 1837–1838. Its resistance to the political principle of responsible government contributed to its short life. Picton is an unincorporated community located in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Prince Edward County in southeastern Ontario, roughly east of Toronto.
