Abondance Cheese
Abondance () is a semi-hard, fragrant, raw-milk cheese made in the Haute-Savoie Departments of France, department of France. Its name comes from a small commune also called Abondance, Haute-Savoie, Abondance. A round of Abondance weighs approximately , and its aroma is comparable to Beaufort (cheese), Beaufort, another French cheese variety. Abondance is made exclusively from milk produced by the Abondance (cattle), Abondance, montbéliarde, and tarine breeds of cattle. The proportion of the Abondance breed within the herd of cattle that produces the milk must be a minimum of 55 percent. In 1998, 873 tonnes were produced (+16.4 percent since 1996), 34 percent from local farms. Abondance cheese was granted an Appellation d'origine contrôlée or AOC in 1990. Abondance (cattle)
The Abondance is a French breed of dairy cattle. It originated in the high valleys of Haute-Savoie and shares its name with the commune and valley of Abondance and the former canton of in that region. Its area of origin lies within the former Chablais province of the Duchy of Savoy, and until the late nineteenth century it was for that reason known as the Chablaisienne. It is distributed principally in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and is well adapted to rough grazing on mountain terrain. It is the fourth-most numerous French breed of dairy cattle; most of the milk produced is used to make Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée cheeses such as Abondance and Reblochon. Abondance Ski Valley
Abondance Ski Valley is a mid-sized ski area in the Haute-Savoie region of France, near Châtel and La Chapelle d'Abondance. The resort has been open since at least 1964 and was closed in 2007, when the local council voted to shut down the area after 15 years of loss-making. The resort was reopened, however, in 2009 when Gregory Lynn Sherwood, an American entrepreneur, made a deal with the local mayor to operate the ski area for the next 12 years. Location Abondance Ski Valley is located in the Abondance Valley, in the Chablais Alps. The resort is one of 12 ski stations in the Portes du Soleil linked ski area, and is open to Portes du Soleil combined ticket holders, however it is not linked to any other resorts and a drive to La Chapelle d'Abondance or Châtel is required in order to access the rest of the Portes du Soleil. Abondance (1780 Ship)
''Abondance'' was a French ''Baleine''-class gabare (cargo ship) launched in 1780. The Royal Navy captured her on 11 December 1781 and took her into service as a troop transport and store ship under the name HMS ''Abondance''. After the end of the war with France the Admiralty sold her in 1784. She then became a merchantman. Career ''Abondance'' was launched at Le Havre in September 1780. She sailed on 11 December 1781 for the Antilles in a convoy under the command of Admiral de Guichen. She was under the command of a M. Dupuis and was carrying 248 soldiers and ordnance, stores, and provisions.
