Abdelghani Hamel (Arabic: عبدالغني هامل) is an Algerian politician and military figure who served as the Algerian police, Director-General of National Security of Algeria from 2010 to 2018. Biography Hamel was born on July 3, 1955, in Sabra, Algeria, Sabra, Algeria. He holds a degree in computer science from the National School of Computer Science (Algeria), National School of Computer Science and a master's degree in strategic studies and international studies. Hamel had a 37-year career in the Algerian People's National Army (ANP) in the Gendarmerie Nationale (Algeria), Gendarmerie Nationale. He served as chief of staff of the 6th Regional Command of the National Gendarmerie of Tamanrasset and served in Ghardaïa. He later served as the head of the public security division at the National Gendarmerie in Algiers, and later regional commander of the National Gendarmerie in Oran. Gendarmerie Nationale (Algeria)
The National Gendarmerie () is the gendarmerie force of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. A branch of the People's National Army, commanded by a major general who reports directly to the minister of national defense. It was created in 1962 by Decree No.019-62 of 23 August 1962 shortly after its independence. In 2012 the gendarmerie consists of 130,000 personnel. Although generally regarded as a versatile and competent paramilitary force, the gendarmerie has been severely tested in dealing with civil disorder since 1988. It frequently has lacked sufficient manpower at the scene of disorder and its units have been inadequately trained and equipped for riot control. The gendarmerie, however, has demonstrated the ability to root out terrorist groups operating from mountain hideouts.
