Abbeyfield
Abbeyfield, formally The Abbeyfield Society, is an English housing charity operating in the United Kingdom. It provides sheltered housing and care homes for elderly people. Its priority is to alleviate loneliness in older people. Based in Solihull, West Midlands, it is a registered charity under English law and a registered housing association. As of January 2022, the charity is led by chief executive Paul Tennant. It was founded in 1956 by Richard Carr-Gomm OBE (1922–2008). The Abbeyfield Society directly owns and manages around 100 houses and 15 care homes. It is a member of Abbeyfield England whose membership together runs a further 200 Abbeyfield Society Houses and over 40 care homes across the UK. Some Abbeyfield properties provide housing, meals and companionship only, whilst others provide an element of care. Richard Carr-Gomm
Major Richard Culling Carr-Gomm, OBE (2 January 1922 – 27 October 2008) was the founder of the Abbeyfield Society, the Morpeth Society, St Matthew Society and the Carr-Gomm Society, UK charities providing care and housing for disadvantaged and lonely people. His father was Mark Culling Carr-Gomm, and his grandfather was Francis Carr-Gomm who is known for befriending Joseph Merrick, the "Elephant Man" while serving as chairman of the London Hospital. Richard was educated at Stowe School and served through World War II in the Royal Berkshire Regiment and the Coldstream Guards from 1939 to 1955. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1944 and was amongst the first troops to enter Belsen in April 1945. Carr-Gomm was deeply affected by the Billy Graham crusade to London in 1954. Nicholas Winton
Sir Nicholas George Winton (; 19 May 1909 – 1 July 2015) was a British stockbroker and humanitarian who helped to rescue refugee children, mostly Jews, Jewish, whose families had fled persecution by Nazi Germany. Born to History of the Jews in Germany, German-Jewish parents who had immigrated to Britain at the beginning of the 20th century, Winton assisted in the rescue of 669 children from Czechoslovakia on the eve of World War II. On a brief visit to Czechoslovakia, he helped compile a list of children in danger and, returning to Britain, he worked to fulfill the legal requirements of bringing the children to Britain and finding homes and sponsors for them.
