Aarne Edward Juutilainen (; 18 October 1904 – 28 October 1976), nicknamed "Marokon kauhu" (), was a Finnish army captain who served in the French Foreign Legion in Morocco between 1930 and 1935. After returning to Finland, he served in the Finnish army and became a national hero in the Battle of Kollaa during the Winter War with the Soviet Union; with his relentless fighting spirit, he rose to legendary status on the war front. Aarne Hermlin
Aarne Hermlin (6 June 1940 in Võru, Estonia – 17 November 2007 in Salo) was an Estonian chess player who won the Estonian Chess Championship. He was awarded the title of International Correspondence Chess Master in 1986 and of FIDE Master in 1992. Biography In 1958, Aarne Hermlin graduated from secondary school in Jõgeva. He started playing chess under the influence of his father Kaarel Hermlin (1905-1960), who was a chess coach in Jõgeva. In 1956 and 1957 Aarne Hermlin twice won Estonian junior chess championship. In 1968 he shared 2nd place in the Baltic Chess Championship. In 1975 he shared 1st place with Viktor Kupreichik at a strong chess tournament in Pärnu. He won the gold medal at the Estonian Chess Championships in 1968, silver in 1981 and bronze twice, in 1965 and 1984. Antti Amatus Aarne (5 December 1867 – 2 February 1925) was a Finnish folklorist. Background Aarne was a student of Kaarle Krohn, the son of the folklorist Julius Krohn. He further developed their historic-geographic method of comparative folkloristics, and the initial version of what became the Aarne–Thompson classification system of classifying folktales, first published in 1910 and extended by Stith Thompson first in 1927 and again in 1961. Aarne Arvonen
(4 August 1897 – 1 January 2009) was, at age 111 years, 150 days, a Finnish supercentenarian. Arvonen was born at a time when Finland was still autonomous part of the Russian Empire. Arvonen was the last known living Finnish person to have been born in the 1800s. Biography Aarne Arvonen was born in Helsinki and was the last surviving veteran of the Finnish Civil War of 1918 having served for the Red Guard. After the Civil War he spent a year at the Tammisaari prison camp. Arvonen later lived in Kallio, Helsinki, and had two daughters, Irma and Paula, with his wife Sylvi Emilia Salonen. At this time Arvonen was a smoker. His wife died in 1938, and that year he moved to Järvenpää, where he eventually lived in the Vanhankylänniemi rest home. Els Aarne
Elze Janovna Paemurru (30 March 1917 – 14 June 1995), known as Els Aarne, was an Estonian composer, pianist and pedagogue during the Soviet Union. Life and career Elze Janovna Paemurru was born as on 30 March 1917 in Makiivka, Russian Empire (now Ukraine); her pseudonym was Els Aarne. She studied at the Tallinn Conservatory, graduating as a music teacher in 1939 after instruction from Gustav Ernesaks, in 1942 as pianist with Gustav Ernesaks and in 1946 as composer under Heino Eller. Aarne lectured at the Tallinn Conservatory on music theory from 1944 to 1974. She died on 14 June 1995. From the late 1940s to the late 1960s, Aarne Ilmari Niemelä was one of Finland's leading chess players. Aarne Emil Kreuzinger-Janik (born 13 April 1950, Lübeck, West Germany) is a German lieutenant general of the Bundeswehr. He was the commander of the Air Force Forces Command from 2006 to 2009, and, from 2009 to 2012, the 14th Inspector of the Air Force.
