A Singles Collection (album)
''A Singles Collection'' (released as ''Six of One, Half-Dozen of the Other'' in the U.S.) is a compilation album of Marillion singles from both the Fish era and the Steve Hogarth era, celebrating the band's ten-year jubilee (taking 1982, when their debut single was released, as the starting point). It includes the band's six most successful singles of the Fish era, plus all six Steve Hogarth singles up to that year. The tracks on it are not ordered chronologically, unlike on the later compilations '' The Best of Both Worlds'' (1997) and '' The Best of Marillion'' (2003) that likewise cover both vocalists' eras. Additionally, it contains two new recordings with Hogarth on vocals, "I Will Walk on Water" and a cover version of the Rare Bird song "Sympathy". This was also released as a single, which peaked at no. 16 in the UK Singles Chart (May 1992), making it the band's highest-charting single between 1987 and 2004. Marillion
Marillion are a British neo-prog band, formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, in 1979. They emerged from the post-punk music scene in Britain and existed as a bridge between the styles of punk rock and classic progressive rock, becoming the most commercially successful neo-prog band of the 1980s. Marillion released their debut single "Market Square Heroes" in 1982, followed by their first album ''Script for a Jester's Tear'' in 1983. They have released 20 studio albums in total. The band achieved eight Top 10 UK albums between 1983 and 1994, including a List of UK Albums Chart number ones of the 1980s, No. 1 album in 1985 with ''Misplaced Childhood''. Rare Bird
Rare Bird were an English progressive rock band, formed in 1969. They released five studio albums between 1969 and 1974. In the UK, the organ-based single "Sympathy" reached number 27 in February 1970, selling an estimated one million globally. Career The band was formed in December 1969. It featured lead singer and bassist Steve Gould, organist Graham Stansfield, electric pianist David Kaffinetti and drummer Mark Ashton. The first album, released in 1969, was called ''Rare Bird''. Along with Van der Graaf Generator and the Nice, they were one of the first bands signed to Charisma Records, the record label that Tony Stratton Smith had founded. Steve Gould (musician)
Steve Gould (born 25 March 1950) is a British singer and musician who was the lead singer and bassist (later, rhythm guitarist) of the late 1960s to mid 1970s London-based progressive rock band, Rare Bird. They had one hit single titled " Sympathy" which peaked at No. 27 in the UK Singles Chart. Gould went on to form the mainstream band Runner on Island Records in 1977 after Rare Bird broke up. The band's debut album charted in the Billboard 200. When Runner did not work out due to differences with the label, Gould joined the Alvin Lee band in 1980, with whom he played bass on different occasions during two decades. Mark Ashton is a British musician, best known as the drummer of the band Rare Bird, known for their single "Sympathy". Musical career Ashton started his musical career playing drums for progressive rock band Rare Bird, formed in 1969 by organist Graham Field. ''Script for a Jester's Tear'' is the debut studio album by British neo-prog band Marillion, released in the United Kingdom on 14 March 1983 by EMI Records. The album reached number seven and spent 31 weeks in the UK Albums Chart, eventually achieving a platinum certificate, and produced the top 40 single " He Knows You Know" and the top 20 single " Garden Party". Mick Pointer
Michael Pointer (born 22 July 1956) is an English drummer. He is known for his work in the neo-prog bands Marillion and Arena. Career Pointer was the original drummer and a founding member of Marillion. He appeared on the band's debut EP '' Market Square Heroes'' (1982) and debut LP '' Script for a Jester's Tear'' (1983). He was sacked from the band following the album's UK tour and ultimately replaced by Ian Mosley. Lead singer Fish later told ''Classic Rock'' that Pointer had been dismissed because he had "never liked Mick's drumming", "his timing was awful" and "everybody was developing except him". Produced by Nick Tauber, it was recorded between November 1983 and February 1984 at various studios and was the first to feature drummer Ian Mosley, following the dismissal of the band's original drummer Mick Pointer. The album is titled after a military slang term well known at the time of release. ''Clutching at Straws'' is the fourth studio album by the British neo-prog band Marillion, released on June 22, 1987. It was the last album with lead singer Fish, who left the band in 1988, and is a concept album. Although ''Clutching at Straws'' did not achieve the sales of its predecessor, the number one album '' Misplaced Childhood'', spending 15 weeks on the UK album chart (the shortest chart residency of any of Marillion's first four studio albums), it was still an immediate commercial success, becoming the second highest charting Marillion album by entering the chart at number two. ''Seasons End'' is the fifth studio album by British neo-prog band Marillion, released in 1989. The album was the first to feature current lead vocalist Steve Hogarth, following the departure of former vocalist Fish in late 1988. It reached number 7 on the UK Albums Chart. Overview Following the departure of Fish, Marillion started to audition singers while writing the new album, and they eventually chose Steve Hogarth. The music for ''Seasons End'' was mostly written before Hogarth joined Marillion, and only a couple of songs on it actually have some pieces written by him, these being "Easter" and "The Space". It is a concept album loosely based on the childhood of Marillion's lead singer, Fish, who was inspired by a brief incident that occurred while he was under the influence of LSD. Peter Trewavas (born 15 January 1959) is an English musician, best known as the bassist of the progressive rock band Marillion. He joined in 1982, replacing Diz Minnitt, while acting as a backing vocalist and occasional guitarist. Biography Trewavas was born in Middlesbrough, but spent much of his childhood in the Buckinghamshire town of Aylesbury. Steven Rothery (born 25 November 1959) is an English musician who is the original guitarist and the longest continuous member of the progressive rock band Marillion. Outside Marillion, Rothery has recorded two albums as part of the duo The Wishing Tree and an instrumental solo album, ''The Ghosts of Pripyat'', released in September 2014. He also founded the British Guitar Academy in 2011.
