A Severa
Maria Severa Onofriana (26 July 182030 November 1846), also known simply as A Severa, was a Portuguese fado singer and guitarist. She is regarded, in her short life, as the first fado singer to have risen to fame, attaining a near-mythical status after her death. Fado has been described as the Portuguese expression of "the blues", and ''fado'' roughly means 'fate'. Biography Maria Severa Onofriana was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in the neighborhood of Madragoa in 1820. She was the daughter of Severo Manuel and Ana Gertrudes. Severa's father was of cigano ancestry. Her mother was originally from Ovar, migrated to Lisbon with Ovar fishermen, worked as a prostitute and became the owner of a tavern. Severa's mother had the nickname ''A Barbuda'' ('the bearded woman'). Severa is said to have been a tall and gracious courtesan or prostitute, and would sing the fado in taverns where she would also play the Portuguese guitar. Júlio Dantas
Júlio Dantas, GCC (1876 – 25 May 1962) was a Portuguese doctor, poet, journalist, politician, diplomat and playwright. Biography Writing career In 1902, Dantas published the one-act verse play '' A Ceia dos Cardeais'' (''The Dinner of the Cardinals''). In 1907, his one-act play ''Rosas de Todo o Ano'' (''Roses all the Year'') had its premiere in Lisbon. It was later translated into English by A. F. d'Almeida Carvalho and Mrs. Edward Lewis, and its 1912 Royal Court Theatre debut was the first time a play translated from Portuguese had been performed in London. In 1931, one of his plays was adapted for the screen as '' A Severa'': it was one of the earliest sound films in Portuguese cinema. In 1947, he published the play ''Frei António das Chagas'' about a Portuguese soldier's conversion to becoming a mystic.
