''A Muskrat Lullaby'' is a one-act opera by Edward Barnes, based on the children's book, '' Mama Don't Allow'' by Thacher Hurd. The work was commissioned by the Los Angeles Opera with funding from the Milken Family Foundation, and originally premiered in Los Angeles in 1993. Edward Barnes (composer)
Edward Barnes (born December 16, 1958) is an American composer and Record producer, producer. Career Edward Barnes studied music composition at the Juilliard School with composers Vincent Persichetti and David Diamond (composer), David Diamond, and at Dartington Hall in the United Kingdom with composer-conductor Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Early in his career he established himself as an opera composer, working in Boston as resident composer of Sarah Caldwell's Opera Company of Boston and later at the Los Angeles Opera. John Thacher Hurd (born March 6, 1949) is an American artist and the creator of children's picture books including ''Mama Don't Allow'' and ''Art Dog''. Biography Thacher Hurd was born in Burlington, Vermont, the son of children's book creators Clement Hurd and Edith Thacher Hurd.
