A Musical History
''A Musical History'' is the second box set to anthologize Canadian-American rock group the Band. Released by Capitol Records on September 27, 2005, it features 111 tracks spread over five compact discs and one DVD. Roughly spanning the group's journey from 1961 to 1977, from their days behind Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan through the departure of Robbie Robertson and the first disbanding of the group. The set includes highlights from each of the group's first seven studio albums and both major live recordings and nearly forty rare or previously unreleased performances. Capitol released a single CD+DVD abridged version titled ''The Best of A Musical History'' in 2007. It included a selection of what the compilers felt were the best tracks of the five CDs, as well as a shorter version of the DVD. Box Set
A boxed set or (its US name) box set is a set of items (for example, a compilation of books, musical recordings, films or television programs) traditionally packaged in a box, hence 'boxed', and offered for sale as a single unit. Music Artists and bands with a long and successful career often have anthology or "essential" collections of their music released as box sets. These often include rare and never-before-released tracks. Some box sets collect previously released singles or albums by a music artist, and often collect the complete discography of an artist, such as Pink Floyd's ''Oh, by the Way'' and ''Discovery (Pink Floyd box set), Discovery'' sets. Music From Big Pink
''Music from Big Pink'' is the debut studio album by the Canadian-American rock band the Band. Released on July 1, 1968, by Capitol Records, it employs a distinctive blend of country, rock, folk, classical, R&B, blues, and soul. The album's title refers to a house in West Saugerties, New York called " Big Pink", which was shared by bassist/singer Rick Danko, pianist/singer Richard Manuel and keyboardist Garth Hudson and in which the album's music was partly composed. The album itself was recorded at A & R Recording in New York and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles in early 1968, and followed the band's stint backing Bob Dylan on his 1966 tour (as the Hawks) and time spent together in upstate New York recording material that was officially released in 1975 as '' The Basement Tapes'', also with Dylan. ''Saturday Night Live'' (''SNL'') is an American Late night television in the United States, late-night live television, live sketch comedy variety show created by Lorne Michaels and developed by Michaels and Dick Ebersol that airs on NBC. The show's premiere was hosted by George Carlin on NBC on October 11, 1975, under the original title ''NBC's Saturday Night''. The show's comedy sketches, which often parody popular culture and politics, are performed by a Saturday Night Live cast members, large and varying cast of repertory and newer cast members. ''The Last Waltz'' is the second live album by the Band, released on Warner Bros. Records in 1978, catalogue 3WS 3146. It is the soundtrack to the 1978 film of the same name, and the final album by the original configuration of the Band. It peaked at No. 16 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Contents The triple album documents the Band's "farewell" concert which took place at Bill Graham's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day 1976. The event included an actual Thanksgiving dinner for 5,000 attendees, with ballroom dancing and a stage set for '' La traviata'' borrowed from the San Francisco Opera. The concert featured songs by the Band interspersed with the group backing up a variety of musical guests. ''Islands'' is the seventh studio album by Canadian-American rock group the Band. It was released on March 14, 1977, through Capitol Records, and was self-produced. The album, which was compiled primarily of previously unreleased outtakes, was released to fulfill the band's contract with Capitol so that the live concert album '' The Last Waltz'' (1978) could be released through Warner Bros. Records. As the band would soon break up later in 1977, ''Islands'' would be the last album to feature the group's original lineup. Upon release, ''Islands'' received mixed reviews and was a commercial slump for the band. While the band's cover of "Georgia on My Mind" was released the previous year in tandem with the presidential campaign of Jimmy Carter, no singles were released to promote the album. Northern Lights – Southern Cross
''Northern Lights – Southern Cross'' is the sixth studio album by Canadian- American rock band the Band, released in November 1975. It was the first album to be recorded at their new California studio, Shangri-La, and the first album of all new material since 1971's '' Cahoots''. It was recorded using a 24-track tape recorder, which allowed Garth Hudson to include multiple layers of keyboards on several tracks, and it is the only Band album where all songs are credited as compositions of guitarist Robbie Robertson. Three songs from the album – " It Makes No Difference", "Ophelia" and "Acadian Driftwood" – were performed at ''The Last Waltz'', the group's 1976 penultimate stage performance of all five members. ''Before the Flood'' is a live album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan and The Band, released on June 20, 1974, on Asylum Records in the United States and Island Records in the United Kingdom. It was Dylan's first live album, although live recordings of earlier performances would later be released. It is the 15th album by Dylan and the seventh by the Band, and documents their joint 1974 American tour. ''Planet Waves'' is the fourteenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on January 17, 1974, by Asylum Records in the United States and Island Records in the United Kingdom. Dylan is supported on the album by longtime collaborators the Band, with whom he embarked on a major reunion tour (documented on the live album '' Before the Flood'') following its release. With a successful tour and a host of publicity, ''Planet Waves'' was a hit, enjoying a brief stay at on the US ''Billboard'' charts—a first for the artist—and in the UK. Reviews were generally positive; critics were not as negative as they had been with some then-recent Bob Dylan albums (namely ''Self Portrait'' and '' Dylan'') but still not enthusiastic for the album's brand of laid-back roots rock, but it was nevertheless considered an improvement over those albums. ''Moondog Matinee'' is the fifth studio album by Canadian/American rock group the Band, released in 1973. It consists entirely of cover material reflecting the group's love of R&B and blues music, with one exception in their interpretation of the theme from the film ''The Third Man''. In a 2002 interview, Levon Helm described the reasoning for recording an album of covers: "That was all we could do at the time. We couldn't get along—we all knew that fairness was a bunch of shit. We all knew we were getting screwed, so we couldn't sit down and create no more music. ' Up on Cripple Creek' and all that stuff was over—all that collaboration was over, and that type of song was all we could do." ''Rock of Ages: The Band in Concert'' is a live album by the Band, released in 1972. It was compiled from recordings made during their series of shows at the Academy of Music in New York City, from December 28 through December 31, 1971. ''Cahoots'' is the fourth studio album by Canadian- American rock band the Band. It was released on September 15, 1971 to mixed reviews, and was their last album of original material for four years. The album's front cover was painted by New York artist/illustrator Gilbert Stone, while the back cover features a photograph portrait of the group by Richard Avedon. The album features guest vocals from Van Morrison. Libby Titus, the partner of drummer Levon Helm and mother of their daughter Amy Helm, also contributed uncredited backing vocals to "The River Hymn", the first time a woman appeared on a Band album. ''Rolling Stone'' critic Jon Landau described the mood of the album as being "filled with a 'tinge of extinction.
