A Game of Pool is an extant American silent film from 1913. It is the first American movie about the game of pool ever made and includes special effects. It stars Edgar Kennedy, Fred Mace Fred Mace (August 22, 1878 – February 21, 1917) was a comedic actor during the silent era in the United States. He appeared in more than 150 films between 1909 and 1916. Mace worked for Mack Sennett at Keystone Studios. Shortly after he left, ..., Ford Sterling, and Mack Sennett (who also directed and produced the movie). It was a Keystone comedy film. The cast also includes Wilfred Lucas, Fred Gamble, Billy Gilbert, and Edgar Kennedy. The film was released on August 7, 1913. The 1912 Frank Wilson film from Britain, '' Billiards Mad'', preceded it. According to Rod Serling, it is "the story of the best pool player living and the best pool player dead." Opening narration Plot Pool shark Jesse Cardiff stays after hours at Lister's Pool Room in Chicago, practicing. Jesse bitterly muses that he would be considered the greatest pool player of all time, if it were not for the memory of the late James Howard "Fats" Brown overshadowing him. He says he would give anything to play one game against Fats, prompting Fats himself to wearily rise from a pool table in the afterlife. "A Game of Pool" is the fifty-fifth episode and the twentieth episode of the third season (1988–89) of the revived television series ''The Twilight Zone''. It is a remake of the original series 1961 episode of the same name, dealing with a pool match between an up-and-coming player and a deceased pool legend. Plot In a pool hall after closing time, a young pool player named Jesse Cardiff practices his shot and complains about being compared to pool legend Fats Brown. He boasts that if Fats were alive he could beat him. He turns around to see Fats Brown sitting in the bar. Fats tells Jesse that because he is legendary, in a sense he lives forever. Fats goads him into a match in which if Jesse loses, he will die, but if he wins, he lives - seemingly gaining nothing from victory. They play and the match is fairly even.
