ADO (band)
ADO were a seminal Sino-foreign rock band, formed in Beijing in 1986. They are most remembered for collaborating with Cui Jian, a partnership that yielded Cui's first complete album, '' Rock 'n' Roll on the New Long March'', in 1989. The album included " Nothing to My Name", the first rock anthem in China, and Cui's most famous song. The band took their name from the Swahili word for "friend". ADO included two foreigners: bassist Kassai Balazs, a Hungarian student, and guitarist/vocalist Eddie Randriamampionona, a Madagascan embassy worker. The band began collaborating with Cui Jian in 1987, the same year the latter left the Beijing Symphony Orchestra. In the years to come, most of ADO's members were absorbed into Cui's own backing band, and continued to tour and release new music with him. Cui Jian or Choi Geon ( zh, c=崔健; ; born 2 August 1961) is a Chinese singer-songwriter and musician. Liu Yuan (musician)
Liu Yuan (, pronounced ; January 1, 1960 – December 22, 2024) was a Chinese musician, who played tenor and baritone saxophone as well as the Chinese wind instrument called ''suona''. Life and career His father was a player of the ''suona'', a traditional Chinese wind instrument, and this was also Liu's first instrument. At about the age of eight, he began his performing career, playing in a government-run children's musical group. He continued his ''suona'' studies at the Beijing Art School, graduating at age 19, at which time he entered a ''danwei'' (work unit) called the Beijing Song and Dance Troupe. With this group, Liu had the opportunity to travel, both inside and outside of China. In 1978 and 1980, the troupe toured Europe, performing in Romania, France, Switzerland, and other nations. Nothing To My Name
"Nothing to My Name" ( zh, s=一无所有, p=Yī wú suǒ yǒu) is a song by Chinese rock musician Cui Jian. It is widely considered Cui's most famous and most important work, and one of the most influential songs in the history of the People's Republic of China, both as a seminal point in the development of Chinese rock music and as a political sensation. The song was an unofficial anthem for Chinese youth and activists during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre. Both in its lyrics and instruments, the song mixes traditional Chinese styles with modern rock elements. In the lyrics, the speaker addresses a girl who is scorning him because he has nothing.
