ACT Electricity Authority
The Australian Capital Territory Electricity Authority (ACTE or A.C.T. Electricity Authority) was an authority formed on 1 July 1963 to manage energy supply in the Australian Capital Territory. During the 1950s and 60s Canberra's population was rapidly increasing, causing excessive energy demands and price increases. In response the Minister for the Interior, Sir Gordon Freeth, formed the new Authority. ActewAGL
ActewAGL is an Australian multi-utility joint venture company that provides utility services in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and south-east New South Wales. The company was formed in October 2000 between the Australian Gas Light Company (now AGL Energy) and ACTEW Corporation (now Icon Water), an ACT Government-owned corporation. As of October 2017, ActewAGL is made up of two partnerships: * ActewAGL Retail — owned equally by Icon Water and AGL Energy via subsidiary companies. * ActewAGL Distribution — owned equally by Icon Water and Jemena Ltd via subsidiary companies. Australian Capital Territory
The Australian Capital Territory (commonly abbreviated as ACT), known as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) until 1938, is a landlocked federal territory of Australia containing the national capital Canberra and some surrounding townships. It is located in southeastern Australian mainland as an enclave completely within the state of New South Wales. Founded after Federation as the seat of government for the new nation, the territory hosts the headquarters of all important institutions of the Australian Government. On 1 January 1901, federation of the colonies of Australia was achieved. Section 125 of the new Australian Constitution provided that land, situated in New South Wales and at least from Sydney, would be ceded to the new federal government. Gordon Freeth
Sir Gordon Freeth, KBE (6 August 191427 November 2001) was an Australian politician and diplomat. He served in the House of Representatives from 1949 to 1969, including as a minister in the Coalition governments from 1958 to 1969. He later served as Ambassador to Japan from 1970 to 1973 and High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 1977 to 1980. Early life Freeth was born in Angaston, South Australia, the son of Robert Freeth (1886–1979) and Gladys Mary Snashall. He attended Sydney Church of England Grammar School and the Guildford Grammar School in Western Australia, where his father was Headmaster from 1928 to 1949. In 1937 he rowed in the bow seat of the Western Australian men's eight which contested the King's Cup at the Australian Interstate Regatta. The Australian Capital Territory Advisory Council was an elected body that operated from 1930 until 1974, when it was replaced by the Australian Capital Territory House of Assembly. The Council originally consisted of three elected members, being increased to five in 1952, to six in 1957 and to eight in 1959. It replaced the Federal Capital Commission and initially included members appointed by the Departments of Works and Railways, Home Affairs, Health and Attorney-General. Energy In The Australian Capital Territory
Energy produced in the Australian Capital Territory mainly consists of solar electricity. Electricity consumed in the Australian Capital Territory mainly comes from the national power grid through substations at Holt and Fyshwick (via Queanbeyan). The ACT currently mandates that 100 percent of its electricity, will be supplied from renewable sources by 2020. The ACT has four solar farms capable of generating about 56.3 megawatts. From 1913 until the mid 1950s some power was produced from the Kingston Powerhouse, a thermal power station in Kingston. When its renewable sources are insufficient the ACT receives reserve power from suppliers in NSW, including from non renewable sources.
