Mediawan Thematics (formerly known as AB Groupe) is a French television channel business and audiovisual distribution group in the field of broadcasting that is owned by Mediawan. History Mediawan Thematics had its roots under the name of AB Productions which it was founded in 1977 by Jean-Luc Azoulay and Claude Berda as a music production company, and in 1987 went into the world of television. In 1991, AB Productions created their own music record publishing label named AB Disques who had published their own music videos. In December 1995, AB Groupe launched their first television channel named AB Channel 1 (now AB1). In July 1996, AB Productions announced that they've expanded their catalogue by acquiring Pierre Grimblat's French production company Hamster Productions and its parent company The Hamster Group which had merged with AB Productions to become the biggest French television production company with Hamster Productions became a subsidiary of AB Productions. Encyclopédia (Stylized ''ENCYCLO'') was a French television channel dedicated to encyclopedic knowledge. History of the channel Encyclopédia was launched in 1996 with the launch of the AB Sat satellite package as a documentary channel dedicated to encyclopedic knowledge, but mostly on science and engineering, notably medicine and modern inventions. XXL is a television channel in France that is dedicated to pornography and erotica. Created in March 1996 and transmitted by the AB Sat satellite, it was at the time the first French channel to broadcast pornography every evening. Nowadays, it is available on every cable and satellite distributor as an option channel. XXL starts its programming at 22:30 CET with either an erotic film, or a talk show, sometimes hosted by former pornographic film actresses. Starting at midnight, it broadcasts two pornographic films, of which the second is a repeat broadcast from the previous week. Mangas is a French television channel dedicated to airing anime. It has also aired tokusatsu. History of the channel AB Cartoons was launched in 1996 as a youth channel on the AB Sat package. It showed Japanese animation (anime) already shown on '' Club Dorothée'' on TF1. Due to the popularity of the genre with young adults and teens as well as criticism of the violence shown in the programmes, the channel was renamed Mangas, on 1 September 1998 using the logo of the magazine ''D.MANGAS'' (the former Dorothée Magazine, although the show on TF1 had ended in 1997). On 15 February 2011, the channel switched to 16:9 format.
