A278 Road
The A278 (Hoath Way) is a road running north–south in north Kent, England. The whole length of the road is dual carriageway, within Medway Council but is a non-primary route. History The A278 was formerly used as the number for the Felbridge – Horsham road, which is now part of the A264. However, the A278 is now used for the long dual carriageway that links the M2 to the A2. The A278 was opened in March 1966. The route The road begins at Junction 4 of the widened M2 (since 2003) where it travels in a northerly direction towards Gillingham. About along the route there is a roundabout, with road links to Hempstead and Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre on the left, and Wigmore on the right. The A278 continues as a dual carriageway travelling northwards. The route is generally surrounded by trees for much of its length. Park Wood, Rainham
Parkwood or Park Wood is a housing estate and district in Gillingham at the south-eastern corner of the Medway conurbation in Kent, England. It was built mainly during the 1960s and 1970s, largely by Ward Homes, and originally called Rainham Park. Parkwood is bordered by Wigmore to the west, Rainham to the north, and the M2 motorway to the south. It is within the Rainham South council ward. Amenities St. Paul's Church sits in the centre of Parkwood, standing near to the adjacent shopping centre. The timber and metal church was consecrated in October 1998. Parkwood is home to Parkwood Primary School, situated on Deanwood Drive, which provides education for children aged 4-11. The school was burned down from a fire in February 1979. Foxburrow Wood also sits on Deanwood Drive. Gillingham ( ) is a town in Kent, England, which forms a conurbation with neighbouring Chatham, Kent, Chatham, Rochester, Kent, Rochester, Strood and Rainham, Kent, Rainham. It is the largest town in the borough of Medway and in 2020 had a population of 108,785. Etymology Gillingham's name is Old English in origin and means "the homestead of Gylla's people". Medway Council
Medway Council is the local authority of Medway, a local government district in the ceremonial county of Kent, England. The council is a unitary authority, being a district council which also performs the functions of a county council; it is independent from Kent County Council. The council was created on 1 April 1998 and replaced Rochester-upon-Medway City Council and Gillingham Borough Council. The council has been under no overall control since by-elections in February 2025, being run by a minority Labour administration. A264 Road
The A264 is an east–west road in southern England that runs from Pembury in west Kent to Five Oaks in West Sussex. History There have been a number of notable changes in this important east–west route which follows the north Sussex border with Kent and Surrey. Originally the route started in Tunbridge Wells, the Pembury to Tunbridge Wells section being originally the A263. West of Tunbridge Wells, instead of following its northerly route to East Grinstead via Holtye and Hammerwood, which was the B2110 prior to about 1970, it followed what is now the B2110 through Groombridge and Hartfield to Forest Row, and multiplexed with the A22 to East Grinstead (which explains the present discontinuity in the B2110 at Forest Row and East Grinstead, the unexpected sharp right at Langton Green when travelling west, and unexpected left at East Grinstead when travelling east along the A264). M2 Motorway (Great Britain)
The M2 is a long motorway in Kent, England, and was built to bypass a section of the A2 road in Kent, which goes through the Medway Towns, Sittingbourne, and Faversham. It provides an alternative route to the Port of Dover, which supplements the M20 motorway located further to the south. The terminal junctions of the M2 intersect with the A2, which come together to form a long trunk road from London to Dover. Route The M2 starts west of Strood, diverging towards the southeast away from the A2 road. Between J1 and J2, the M2 is four lanes in width, and slopes down into the Medway Valley south of Rochester. J2 is located to the northwest of the left bank of the River Medway, linking the A228 road to the M2, which runs between Strood and West Malling. The junction is in a dumbbell configuration, with a short spur of the A228 providing access to the junction. A2 Road (Great Britain)
The A2 is a major road in south-east England, connecting London with the English Channel port of Dover in Kent. This route has always been of importance as a connection between London and sea trade routes to Continental Europe. It was originally known as the Dover Road. The M2 motorway has replaced part of the A2 as the strategic route. Unlike the other single digit A-roads in Great Britain, the A2 does not form a zone boundary.
