A. E. Cross
Alfred Ernest Cross (June 26, 1861 – March 10, 1932) was a Canadian politician, rancher and brewer, known as one of the Big Four who founded the Calgary Stampede in 1912. Early life Born in Montreal, Cross was the oldest of seven children. He trained as a veterinary surgeon. Cross moved to Alberta in 1884 to work at a ranch near what is now Cochrane, Alberta owned by Matthew Henry Cochrane. In 1899 he married Helen Rothney Macleod (1878-1959), the daughter of North-west Mounted Police Commissioner Colonel James Macleod, who gave Calgary its name. Business By 1886 Cross owned his own ranch, the A7 Ranche, located near what is now Nanton, Alberta. Cross returned to Montreal for hospital treatment for appendicitis. He returned to Calgary in 1891 holding a diploma that he had been trained as a brewer's apprentice and established the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company, the first brewery in what was then the Northwest Territories. Nanton, Alberta
Nanton is a town in southern Alberta, southern Alberta, Canada. Nanton was named after Sir Augustus Meredith Nanton of Winnipeg (1860–1925) who directed firms which offered financing for farms and ranches throughout the west. It is located south of Calgary at the junction of Alberta Highway 2, Highway 2 and Alberta Highway 533, Highway 533. Nanton was historically known as "Tap Town", after providing passing motorists with free water supplied from the foothills via a stand tap on the northbound highway. Archie McLean (politician)
Archibald James McLean (September 25, 1860 – October 13, 1933) was a cattleman and politician from Ontario, Canada. He was one of the Big Four who helped found the Calgary Stampede in 1912. Biography Archibald McLean was born September 25, 1860, in Aldborough, Canada West, to James McLean and Clementine McMurchy. His parents were both farmers. In 1881, McLean moved west to Virden, Manitoba (aged 21). While working, he learnt how to raise and handle livestock. About 5 years later, McLean moved further west to the District of Alberta (now a province) from to work as a ranch hand and foreman. His experience led him to a management position a year later at the CY Ranch of the Cypress Cattle Company, located near present-day Taber, Alberta. George Lane (politician)
George Lane (6 March 1856 – 24 September 1925) was an American-born Canadian politician and rancher and known as one of the Big Four who helped found the Calgary Stampede in 1912. In 2016, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Lane was foreman at the Bar U Ranch and eventually returned in the early 1900s to purchase it for $250,000. In 1919, he hosted the Edward VIII, then the Prince of Wales, during his Royal Tour of Canada. On Edward's behalf, he executed the purchase of the neighbouring E.P. Ranch. In 1885, he married Elizabeth Sexsmith and they raised eight children together. In the 1913 Alberta general election, Lane was elected as the first member for the Bow Valley riding for the Alberta Liberal Party. Patrick Burns (July 6, 1856 – February 24, 1937) was a Canadian rancher, meat packer, businessperson, senator, and philanthropist. A self-made man of wealth, he built one of the world's largest integrated meat-packing empires, P. Burns & Co., becoming one of the wealthiest Canadians of his time. He is honoured as one of the Big Four western cattle kings who started the Calgary Stampede in Alberta in 1912. He made his fortune in the meat industry, but ranching was his true passion. Burns's of cattle ranches covered so vast an area of Southern Alberta that he boasted about being able to travel from Cochrane to the US border without ever leaving his land.
