9th ZAI Awards Artmedia Music Academy Awards ---- Presenter(s) ---- Broadcaster STV ---- Grand Prix Kamil Peteraj ---- ◄ 8th │ 10th ► The 9th ZAI Awards, honoring the best in the Slovak music industry for individual achievements for the year of 1998, took time and place on February 26, 1999, at the New Scene Theater in Bratislava. The ceremony was held in association with the local Music Fund (HF) and, for the first time, with the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry Slovakia (SNS IFPPI). For that reason, the accolades were renamed after the Artmedia Music Academy, established by ZAI and the related company. The winners received a plaque with a five-pointed golden star. ZAI Awards
The ZAI Awards (''Hudobný fond'' or HF) are a Slovak music accolade presented by '' Zväz autorov a interprétov populárnej hudby'' (ZAI) to recognize outstanding achievements in the industry for the preceding year in the region. In the early phase, the annual ceremonies were held in association with the local Music Fund (HF) and International Federation of the Phonographic Industry Slovakia (SNS IFPI). For that reason, their follow-up equivalents were frequently renamed; once after the American Gramies (1996–1997). Following a 1997 protest of the U.S. NARAS management against the Czech music awards, also called likewise, the Slovak organization decided to change the adopted name too, renaming then trophies after the Artmedia Music Academy (1998–2000), also established by ZAI. Peter Pišťanek
Peter Pišťanek (28 April 1960 – 22 March 2015) was a Slovak writer. He began publishing short stories in the 1980s, and his first novel, ''Rivers of Babylon'', came out in 1991. This was adapted into a film of the same name in 1998 by Vladimir Balco. The book was followed by the sequels ''Wooden Village'' (1994) and ''End of Freddy'' (1999). Two more of Pišťanek's works were adapted to film, both by Juraj Nvota: his short story "Muzika", which won Best Film at the Sun in a Net Awards in 2008, and his novel ''Rukojemník – Lokomotívy v daždi'', in 2014. Pišťanek committed suicide on 22 March 2015. Life and career In the 1980s, Pišťanek was a co-founder and drummer in the music group Devínska Nová Vec, named after the Bratislava borough where he was born in 1960. Pavol Zelenay
Pavol Zelenay (15 April 1928 – 8 July 2024) was a Slovak swing composer, producer, musician, and music critic who was best known as a co-founder of the Bratislavská lýra popular song contest. Biography Pavol Zelenay was born on 15 April 1928 in the village of Zohor in the Malacky District to Emil Zelenay, a lawyer, and Magdaléna (). He was the oldest of four children. Already during his studies at the grammar school in Piešťany, he was a member of the student band called ''Tiger Jazz Band.'' After high school, he enrolled in the construction engineering program at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava while simultaneously studying clarinet play. In 1950 he recorded his first song at the Slovenský rozhlas studios. Between 1967 and 1984, Zelenay was the head of the popular music department at the Slovenský rozhlas, where he played a crucial role in providing platform for new bands and starting musicians. No Name (Slovak Band)
No Name is a Slovak rock band formed in Košice in 1996 by Viliam Gutray and three Timko brothers: Igor, Roman, and Ivan. Marián Čekovský joined as a keyboardist and was later replaced by Zoli Šallai. A few years later, the youngest Timko brother, Dušan, also became a member of the band. No Name became known to Slovak audiences by taking part in the Bratislavská lýra festival in 1997 History No Name was founded in 1996 in the Slovak city of Košice by the Timko brothers Igor, Roman, and Ivan, together with bass guitarist Viliam Gutray. The band's vocalist, Igor, who teaches singing at the conservatory in Košice, had performed on the TV music talent show ''Zlatá brána'' as a child. Peter Lipa
Peter Lipa (born May 30, 1943) is a Slovak singer, composer, and promoter of jazz. He has been called the Father of Slovak Jazz. Lipa is regarded as the most significant figure in the Slovak jazz scene. He developed a unique vocal style that focused on the lyrics. His music is influenced by performers including Jimmy Rushing, Ray Charles, Al Jarreau, Joe Cocker, and Bobby McFerrin, and is a mix of jazz and blues. He was the first jazz singer to use Slovak. Life and career Lipa was born in Prešov to Hungarian-Jewish parents and has worked in Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Andrej Šeban
Andrej Šeban (born 23 June 1962) is a Slovak jazz fusion musician, composer, producer, studio guitarist, and instructor. He is also an occasional actor. Life and career Šeban was born in Bratislava in 1962. As a child, he took piano lessons and beginning in 1977, he took classical guitar lessons. The same year, he joined the band Nervy (where Martin Ďurinda sang and played guitar). From 1978 to 1979, he was a member of the jazz rock band Miting and in the early 1980s, he played with hard rock band Demikát. He joined the music faculty at Comenius University in 1986 and studied vocal performance. The same year, he wrote the score for the film ''Slané cukríky'' and briefly played in the groups Tristo hrmených and Burčiak with Pavol Habera. IMT Smile is a Slovak rock band formed in 1992 by brothers Ivan and Miro Tásler (their initials provide the "IMT" in the band's name). Richard Müller (singer)
Richard Müller (born 6 September 1961) is a Slovak singer, songwriter, photographer, and occasional actor. He is one of the most successful singers in both Czechia and Slovakia, where he has sold more than one million records. At the beginning of his musical career, he was a member of Pavel Daněk's band Burčiak and later formed his own group, Banket (band), Banket, with whom he recorded three studio albums. He launched a solo career in the early 1990s and has issued sixteen studio albums as well as several compilations and live recordings.
