8 Metre (keelboat)
The International Eight Metre class are class of racing yachts. Eight Metre boats (often called "Eights" or 8mR) are a ''construction class'', meaning that the boats are not identical but are all designed to meet specific measurement formula, in this case International Rule (sailing), International rule. Before WW II, Eights were the most prestigious international yacht racing class and they are still raced around the world. "Eight metre" in class name does not, somewhat confusingly, refer to length of the boat, but product of the formula. 8mR boats are on average some 15 metres long. Between 1907 and 2008 approximately 500 8mR boats were built, 177 of them have survived until today. Early life Dudley Ward was born in London, the son of William Humble Dudley Ward and the great-grandson of William Humble Ward, 10th Baron Ward. Major Sir Philip Hunloke (born Philip Perceval, 26 November 1868 – 1 April 1947) was a British sailing (sport), sailor and courtier. He was the son of Captain Philip Perceval of the Royal Horse Guards but changed his name in 1905. He was a crew member of the British boat ''Sorais'', which won the bronze medal in the 8-metre class in the 1908 Summer Olympics. He served as a Groom in Waiting to King George V from 1911 to 1936, to Edward VIII in 1936, and an extra groom-in-waiting to George VI from 1937 to 1947. He also served in the Boer War and First World War, reaching the rank of Major. He was Commodore of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, Royal Yacht Club from 1943 until his death and was a Younger Brother at Trinity House. He was the father of the Conservative MP Henry Hunloke.
