Photoshop plugins (or plug-ins) are add-on programs aimed at providing additional image effects or performing tasks that are impossible or hard to fulfill using Adobe Photoshop alone. Plugins can be opened from within Photoshop and several other image editing programs (compatible with the appropriate Adobe specifications) and act like mini editors that modify the image. Plugin types Photoshop-compatible plugins fall into several types, distinguishable in Microsoft Windows (and historically in Mac OS 9 and earlier) by their filename extensions. The most common are filters (.8bf), which apply changes to images. Filter Forge is a computer graphics program for Windows and Mac that allows users to create procedural textures and modify images. It can be used as a standalone application or as a plugin for compatible 8bf hosts such as Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Corel PaintShop Pro. It has been under continuous development by Filter Forge OÜ (formerly Filter Forge, Inc) since its official release in March 2007. Filter Forge renders images based on input images and XML documents called "filters". A filter ''(not to be confused with a mathematical filter)'' is essentially a tree of successive generations and/or transformations of color and position. PhotoImpact
Ulead PhotoImpact (originally called Iedit) was a raster and vector graphics editing program published by Ulead Systems. Alongside its image editing capabilities, the program also featured HTML tools, such as a rollover assistant, an imagemap assistant, an HTML assistant, a background designer and a button library. PhotoImpact also used photoshop filters in .8bf format. PhotoImpact had vast support for graphic file formats but also used its own UFO and UFP file format which supported all the aforementioned features. The last version of PhotoImpact released in 2008 was X3/13. In December 2006 Corel acquired Ulead Systems. Corel continued to market PhotoImpact until September 2009 when they discontinued the product, focusing on the competing product Paint Shop Pro. Kai's Power Tools (KPT) are a set of API plugins created by the German computer scientist Kai Krause in 1992 that were designed for use with Adobe Photoshop and Corel Photo-Paint. Kai's Power Tools were sold to Corel in 2000 when MetaCreations was closed. There are various versions of Kai's Power Tools. KPT 3, 5, 6, and X sets are compilations of different filters. Kai Krause (born 14 March 1957) is a German software and graphical user interface designer, best known for founding MetaCreations Corp., for his Kai's Power Tools series of products, and for his contributions to graphical user interface design. Biography Born in Dortmund, Germany, Krause moved to California, United States in 1976. He worked with early synthesizers and vocoders, and contributed sound effects to almost thirty records and movies. During the 1990s he ran several software companies –HSC Software, MetaTools, MetaCreations– to develop tools for graphic designers. In February 2005, the "DEMO" conference acknowledged him as one of the Top 15 Innovators of the last 15 years. Aldus Corporation was an American software company best known for its pioneering desktop publishing software. PageMaker, the company's most well-known product, ushered in the modern era of desktop computers such as the Macintosh seeing widespread use in the publishing industry.
