890 Naval Air Squadron
890 Naval Air Squadron (890 NAS), sometimes known as 890 Squadron, was a Fleet Air Arm (FAA) naval air squadron of the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy (RN). It most recently operated de Havilland Sea Vixen carrier-based fleet air-defence fighter aircraft between August 1967 and August 1971. The squadron was formed in June 1942 in Nova Scotia as a fighter unit and did not receive aircraft until it reached Norfolk, Virginia, in June. There, it obtained ex-USN F4F-3 Wildcats and later exchanged for Grumman Martlet Mk IV before boarding HMS ''Battler'' on December 8 for a trip to the UK, arriving in January 1943. After incorporating 'A' Flight from 881 Naval Air Squadron, it joined HMS ''Illustrious'' in June for operations in Iceland and Norway, later supporting the Salerno landings in September 1943, before disbanding in Puttalam, Ceylon, in August 1944. This is a List of Fleet Air Arm aircraft squadrons. The primary organisational structure for aerial operations within the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) is represented by squadrons. 881 Naval Air Squadron (881 NAS) was a Fleet Air Arm (FAA) naval air squadron of the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy (RN), formed in June 1941. It served as a fighter squadron in the Second World War, taking part in the British Battle of Madagascar, invasion of Madagascar in 1942, in the Allied invasions of Invasion of Normandy, Northern France and Operation Dragoon, Southern France in 1944, also taking part in operations in the Aegean Sea and off Norway before disbanding in October 1945. The squadron was reformed within the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) as a carrier-based anti-submarine warfare squadron, when 826 Squadron RCN was renumbered 881 Squadron RCN in May 1951. Royal Naval Air Station Donibristle or more simply RNAS Donibristle was a former Fleet Air Arm base located east of Rosyth, Fife, and northwest of Edinburgh. It was also known as HMS Merlin. It grew from an emergency landing ground first established in 1917 on the Earl of Moray, Earl of Moray's Donibristle Estate by No. 77 Squadron RAF, 77 Sqn of the Royal Flying Corps and was transferred to Royal Naval Air Service control in September 1917 becoming a RNAS Aircraft Repair Depot.
