7th National Assembly Of Namibia
Below is a list of members of the 7th National Assembly of Namibia. They were selected by their parties based on the results of the 2019 parliamentary election. This National Assembly was inaugurated on 20 March 2020. Like each of the previous National Assemblies, it is led by the South West Africa People's Organization. The 7th National Assembly has 104 seats. 96 candidates were elected according to party lists and are assembled below in the order they appear on their party lists. National Assembly Of Namibia
The National Assembly is the lower chamber of Namibia's bicameral Parliament. Its laws must be approved by the National Council, the upper house. Since 2014, it has a total of 104 members. 96 members are directly elected through a system of closed list proportional representation and serve five-year terms. Eight additional members are appointed by the President. Since 2015, SWAPO member Peter Katjavivi has been the Speaker of the National Assembly. Namibia's National Assembly emerged on Independence Day on 21 March 1990 from the Constituent Assembly of Namibia, following the elections of November 1989. That election, following guidelines established by the United Nations, included foreign observers in an effort to ensure a free and fair election process. Vice-President Of Namibia
The vice-president of Namibia serves as the acting President of Namibia when the President is outside the country's borders, unable to fulfill the duties of the office, or when the Presidency is vacant. The Vice-President is also a member of the National Assembly and the Cabinet. The Vice-President is constitutionally required to 'assist the President in the execution of the functions of government,' and may be assigned any government portfolio by presidential proclamation. The position of Vice-President was established in 2014 along with several other constitutional amendments. The position is controversial due to its unclear portfolio. Sylvia Makgone
Silvia Gonaone Makgone (born September 6, 1963, in Aminuis) is a Namibian politician and teacher who is the incumbent deputy minister of urban and rural development. Early life and education Makgone holds five tertiary education degrees in education and human resources, among them a bachelor's of arts and a bachelor of education. She worked as teacher at Mokganedi Tlhabanello Senior Secondary School in Drimiopsis in the Omaheke Region from 1987 and was promoted to principal of Mokaleng RC Combined School in 1996. She also served as principal of other schools. Career In 2010, Makgone became a member of parliament on a SWAPO ticket. Royal ǀUiǀoǀoo
Royal Johan Kxao ǀUiǀoǀoo (born 30 September 1966) is a Namibian politician who is serving in the cabinet of Namibia as deputy Minister of Marginalised People since March 2015. He was a member of Parliament as a SWAPO backbencher between 2000 and 2010, and after that a special advisor in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Early life and education ǀUiǀoǀoo was born on 30 September 1966 in Tsumkwe in the Otjozondjupa Region. He grew up in Botswana. Between 1991 and 1997 he worked as a teacher at different schools. Margaret Mensah-Williams
Margaret Natalie Mensah-Williams (born 25 December 1961) is a Namibian politician, diplomat, and prominent SWAPO member. She serves as Namibia's ambassador to the United States. Mensah-Williams also served as councillor of Windhoek Khomasdal North constituency from 1998 until 2019, and from this position was elected to represent Khomas Region in the National Council, the upper house of the Namibian Parliament from 2015 to 2019. In the National Council she was elected deputy chairperson in 1998, and chairperson in 2015. She resigned from all regional representative positions prior to the 2019 Namibian general election in order to contest for a seat in the National Assembly, Namibia's lower house, and subsequently became member of Parliament. Peter Hitjitevi Katjavivi (born 12 May 1941) is a Namibian politician who is the Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia since March 2015 and the chancellor of the Namibia University of Science and Technology from 1992 to 2003. Previously he was the founding Vice-Chancellor of the University of Namibia from 1992 to 2003, Ambassador to the European Union from 2003 to 2006, Ambassador to Germany from 2006 to 2008, and Director General of the National Planning Commission from 2008 to 2010. John Mutorwa (born 17 August 1957) is a Namibian politician and current Minister of Works and Transport. A member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), Mutorwa has served in the National Assembly of Namibia as well as the cabinet since 1992. Bernadette Jagger
Bernadette Maria Jagger (born 26 February 1958 in Riemvasmaak, South Africa) is a Namibian politician. She is a member of SWAPO and became appointed to the party's Central Committee in 2012. In 2015 she won a seat in parliament. In a cabinet reshuffle in February 2018 she was appointed Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, succeeding Tommy Nambahu. Jagger is a teacher by profession. She holds certificates in lower and higher primary education from Sohnge Training College and University of Namibia, respectively, and rose through the ranks from being a teacher in 1976, a deputy principal in 1992, to the Kunene Regional Director of Education in 2012. Stanley Simataa
Stanley Mutumba Simataa (born 5 June 1960) is a Namibian politician and former minister of information and communication technology. He served as deputy minister for information from 2010 until his appointment as minister in 2018. Simataa was born on 5 June 1960 in Sikanjambuka in the Caprivi Strip (today Zambezi Region). He obtained a Bachelor in agricultural pedagogy from the University of Limpopo, South Africa, and an MSc in agricultural education from the University of Reading, United Kingdom. Simataa also holds an MBA from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute in Tanzania. Julius Hamunyera Hambyuka (born 25 March 1966) is a Namibian politician who has served as a Member of the National Assembly of Namibia since March 2015. A member of the ruling SWAPO party, he was appointed the Government Chief Whip of the National Assembly in March 2020. Background and education Hambyuka was born on 25 March 1966 in Tondoro in the former South West Africa, now Namibia.
