7th Michigan Cavalry Regiment
The 7th Michigan Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was a part of the famed Michigan Brigade, commanded for a time by Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer. Service The 7th Michigan Cavalry was organized at Grand Rapids, Michigan, in October 1862 by William d'Alton Mann, a future prominent Michigan newspaper and magazine publisher. He was later named as the regiment's colonel. The regiment was mustered out of service on December 15, 1865. Mary Burns (US Civil War Soldier)
Mary Burns or John Burns was an American woman who disguised herself as a man in order to fight in the American Civil War. She enlisted in the 7th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry Regiment in order not to be parted from her lover, who was in the same regiment. Her sex was discovered ten days after being recognized by an acquaintance, before her company had left Detroit. She was arrested in uniform, held in the city jail, charged with masquerading as a man, and sent home. Abram Halstead Ellis (May 21, 1847 – September 25, 1902) was a Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court from January 15, 1901, to September 25, 1902.
