7th Marine Brigade
The 7th Marine Brigade (), commonly known as the "Jiaolong Commandos" or as the "Sea Dragons" (), is a special operations forces in the People's Liberation Army Navy Marine Corps. The brigade is based in Sanya, Hainan Island. The brigade was named the Special Operations Brigade (). According to a 2025 Voice of America article, the Jiaolong Commandos is now named the 7th Marine Brigade. The brigade has at least three special operations battalions and one reconnaissance battalion. History The unit was founded as the Naval Special Operations Battalion () in 2002. On 26 December 2008, 70 soldiers from the unit were deployed to Somalia, where they conducted anti-piracy operations. ''Jiaolong'' () or ''jiao'' (''chiao'', ''kiao'') is a dragon in Chinese mythology, often defined as a "scaled dragon"; it is hornless according to certain scholars and said to be aquatic or river-dwelling. It may have referred to a species of crocodile. Visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) is the term used by United States military and law enforcement agencies for Naval boarding, maritime boarding actions and tactics. The Southern Theater Command Navy (STCN), or the South Sea Fleet (SSF) until 2018, is a formation of China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and the naval component of the Southern Theater Command.
