758th Tank Battalion (United States)
The 758th Tank Battalion was a tank battalion of the United States Army that served during World War II, later becoming the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment. The 758th, the first armored unit whose members were African American soldiers, was formed in 1941 and served in Italy. History On 13 January 1941, the U.S. Army established the 78th Tank Battalion, the first black armored unit. In March 1941 the tankers reported to Fort Knox, Kentucky, to begin armored warfare training. On 8 May 1941 at Fort Knox, Kentucky the 78th Tank Battalion was re-designated as the 758th Tank Battalion (Light). It was the first of three units that would form the all-black 5th Tank Group. The 758th trained in mechanized warfare using the M5 light tank. One of the battalion's more notable members was future baseball star Jackie Robinson. 679th Tank Destroyer Battalion (United States)
The 679th Tank Destroyer Battalion was a tank destroyer battalion of the United States Army active during the Second World War. The unit was activated in June 1943 and shipped overseas in January 1945. After arrival in France, the unit was sent to the Mediterranean front. After arrival, the unit was attached to the 92nd Infantry Division. Like the 614th Tank Destroyer Battalion, it was one of the three segregated tank destroyer battalions that participated in combat during the Second World War. Early service The 679th Tank Destroyer Battalion was activated on 26 June 1943 in Camp Hood. It was the last American tank destroyer battalion to be activated. The 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) (nicknamed Rock of the Marne) is a combined arms division (military), division of the United States Army based at Fort Stewart, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. African Elephant
African elephants are members of the genus ''Loxodonta'' comprising two living elephant species, the African bush elephant (''L. africana'') and the smaller African forest elephant (''L. cyclotis''). Both are social herbivores with grey skin. However, they differ in the size and colour of their tusks as well as the shape and size of their ears and skulls. 761st Tank Battalion
The 761st Tank Battalion was an independent tank battalion of the United States Army during World War II. Its ranks primarily consisted of African American soldiers, who by War Department policy were not permitted to serve in the same units as White troops; the United States Armed Forces did not officially desegregate until after World War II. The 761st were known as the Black Panthers after their distinctive unit insignia, which featured a black panther's head, and the unit's motto was "Come out fighting". Decades after the war, the unit received a Presidential Unit Citation for its actions. Jack Roosevelt Robinson (January 31, 1919 – October 24, 1972) was an American professional baseball player who became the first Black American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era. M5 Light Tank
The M3 Stuart/light tank M3, was a US light tank of World War II, first entered service in the British Army in early 1941 and saw action in the North African campaign in July 1941. The 5th Armored Group was an all-black segregated armored formation that served in World War II. The 5th was the only segregated armored group formed during the war and one of only two armored groups that did not deploy, although its assigned tank battalions all saw combat in the European Theater of Operations.
