6th Virginia Infantry
The 6th Virginia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia. 6th Infantry Regiment organized at Norfolk, Virginia in May, 1861, composed of men recruited from Norfolk and nearby Princess Anne County, Virginia, Princess Anne, Nansemond County, Virginia, Nansemond, and Chesterfield County, Virginia, Chesterfield Counties. The field officers were Colonels Thomas J. Corprew (Norfolk's sheriff in 1861 and captain of the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues), William Mahone (who rose to General and later U.S. Senator), and George T. Rogers; Lieutenant Colonels William T. The 12th Virginia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment mostly raised in Petersburg, Virginia, for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, but with units from the cities of Norfolk, Virginia, Norfolk and Richmond, Virginia, Richmond, and Greensville County, Virginia, Greensville and Brunswick County, Virginia, Brunswick counties in southeastern Virginia. It fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia. The 12th Virginia was organized at Norfolk in May, 1861, using the 4th Battalion Virginia Volunteers as its nucleus. Nansemond is an extinct jurisdiction that was located south of the James River in Virginia Colony and in the Commonwealth of Virginia (after statehood) in the United States, from 1646 until 1974.
