6th Tactical Squadron
The 31st Tactical Air Base (Polish: 31 Baza Lotnictwa Taktycznego – 31.BLoT) is the biggest military unit of Polish Air Force. The unit was created in 2008 as a result of fusion of three previous units: 31st Air Base, 3rd Tactical Squadron and 6th Tactical Squadron. The unit operates two squadrons of F-16 C/D fighters (16 planes in each squadron). The associated base, Krzesiny air base outside of Poznan, currently operates F-16 fighters only. Polish Air Force
The Polish Air Force ( pl, Siły Powietrzne, , Air Forces) is the aerial warfare branch of the Polish Armed Forces. Until July 2004 it was officially known as ''Wojska Lotnicze i Obrony Powietrznej'' (). In 2014 it consisted of roughly 16,425 military personnel and about 475 aircraft, distributed among ten bases throughout Poland. The Polish Air Force can trace its origins to the second half of 1917 and was officially established in the months following the end of World War I in 1918. During the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany in 1939, 70% of its aircraft were destroyed. The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being built for export customers. Mil Mi-2
The Mil Mi-2 ( NATO reporting name Hoplite) is a small, three rotor blade Soviet-designed multi-purpose helicopter developed by the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant designed in the early 1960s, and produced exclusively by WSK "PZL-Świdnik" in Poland. Design and development The Mi-2 was produced exclusively in Poland, in the WSK "PZL-Świdnik" factory in Świdnik. The first production helicopter in the Soviet Union was the Mil Mi-1, modelled along the lines of the S-51 and Bristol Sycamore and flown by Mikhail Mil's bureau in September 1948. During the 1950s it became evident, and confirmed by American and French development, that helicopters could be greatly improved with turbine engines. S. P. Isotov developed the GTD-350 engine and Mil used two of these in the far superior Mi-2. The 31st Air Base ( pl, 31. Baza Lotnicza), commonly known as Poznań-Krzesiny Airport is a Polish Air Force base and military airport, located in Krzesiny, part of the Nowe Miasto district of Poznań. The base was officially constituted on 31 December 2000, and since then has been the home base for the 3rd Tactical Squadron. It is the first base to host the recently acquired F-16 fighters. History In 1941, during its occupation of Poznań, Nazi Germany built an aircraft factory at Krzesiny (German: ''Luftwaffenfliegerhorst Kreising''), along with an airfield to service it. The factory, run by Focke-Wulf, was a target for Allied bombers in the course of the war, on 29 May 1944 for Eighth Air Force. 3rd Tactical Squadron
The 3rd Tactical Squadron (known as 3.ELT - 3 Eskadra Lotnictwa Taktycznego in Poland) was a fighter squadron of the Polish Air Force established in 2001 in Poznań, Poland. The squadron was stationed in the 31st Air Base and has acquired F-16 C/D Block 52+ Adv. fighters. From 1954 to 2001 the unit was known as "3. Pułk Lotnictwa Myśliwskiego". In 2008 the unit was fused with the 6th Tactical Squadron and the 31st Air Base. Those three units were transformed into 31st Tactical Air Base unit.
