68th (Durham) Regiment Of Foot (Light Infantry)
The 68th (Durham) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) was an infantry regiment of the British Army, raised in 1758. Under the Childers Reforms it amalgamated with the 106th Bombay Light Infantry to form the Durham Light Infantry in 1881, the 68th Regiment becoming the 1st Battalion, and the 106th Regiment becoming the 2nd Battalion in the regular Army. It saw action during the Seven Years' War before being converted to Light Infantry in 1808, fighting with distinction in the Peninsular Army under Arthur Wellesley. It would go on to fight with some distinction during the Crimean War, served during the Indian Mutiny and the New Zealand wars before returning to India between 1872 and 1888. The 68th Armor Regiment is an armored regiment of the United States Army. It was first activated in 1933 in the Regular Army as the 68th Infantry Regiment (Light Tanks). Lineage The regiment was originally constituted on 9 July 1918 in the Regular Army as the 68th Infantry Regiment, and assigned to the 9th Division. It was organized in July 1918 at Camp Sheridan, Alabama, from personnel of the 46th Infantry Regiment. It did not go overseas before the end of the war, and was relieved from the 9th Division and demobilized 15 February 1919 at Camp Sheridan. 68th Armoured Regiment (India)
68th Armoured Regiment is an armoured regiment which is part of the Armoured Corps of the Indian Army. Formation The regiment was raised on 1 March 1968 by Lieutenant Colonel (later Brigadier) R.N. Thumby at Ahmednagar. It was raised with Vijayanta tanks. Unlike most armoured regiments raised after Independence with a mixed class composition, 68 Armoured Regiment was raised from four different ethnic classes. It drew troops from Rajput troops from the Armoured Corps, Marathas from the Bombay Sappers and the Maratha Light Infantry, Ahirs from the Armoured Corps, Regiment of Artillery and the Kumaon Regiment and Gujjars from the Grenadier and Rajput Regiments. The 68th Regiment Indiana Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 68th Indiana Infantry was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana and mustered in for three years service August 19, 1862. The 68th New York Infantry Regiment served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Also known as the Cameron Rifles or the Second German Rifle Regiment, the men were mostly German immigrants. Organized in July 1861, three months after the outbreak of war, the 68th saw service in the Eastern and Western theaters. As a part of the Army of the Potomac, it was initially assigned to the defenses of Washington, D.C. Later, the 68th was transferred to the Shenandoah Valley and fought at the Battle of Cross Keys.
