66th Division (Spain)
The 66th Mixed Brigade was a unit of the Popular Army of the Republic that participated in the Spanish Civil War. Born in the context of the Battle of Madrid, took part in the Battle of Jarama and the fronts of Guadalajara and Extremadura.( es, 42.ª División)Carlos Engel, ''Historia de las Brigadas Mixtas del E. Battle Of Peñarroya
The Battle of Valsequillo, also known as Battle of Peñarroya, was a diversionary Republican offensive which took place in the Sierra Morena area in southern Extremadura and the north of Andalusia between 5 January and 4 February 1939 during the Spanish Civil War. The main goal of the offensive was to distract forces from the Nationalist offensive against Catalonia, but after having occupied 500 square kilometers the Republican advance was stopped and all the territorial gains were lost to a Nationalist counteroffensive. Background After the defeat of the Battle of Ebro, the Republican Army was broken and would never recover. The Republicans had lost most of their armament and experienced units. Mixed Brigades
Mixed brigade ( es, brigada mixta) was a basic tactical military unit of the Republican army during the Spanish Civil War. It was initially designed as “pocket division”, an innovative maneuverable combined-arms formation. Because of high saturation with specialized troops and services it would have resembled a division, but in terms of manpower it would have been much smaller and amount to some 3,700 men. Shortages of career officers and NCOs plus inability to provide arms and equipment needed rendered the original mixed brigade pattern unworkable. The Republican general staff kept redrafting the scheme with decreasing proportion of non-infantry sub-units, though even these arrangements proved impossible to implement. Most of 188 mixed brigades raised during the war were closer to the infantry regiment blueprint. Joaquín Pérez Martín Parapar
Joaquín Pérez Martín-Parapar (1904–1941) was a Spanish railway and military man. Biography Joaquín Pérez Martín-Parapar was a railway man by profession, but after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, joined the Republican militias. He came to join the PCE Communist Party of Spain. In December 1936 he was appointed commander of the newly created 66th Mixed Brigade. He led this unit in the battle of Jarama, and later in heavy fighting in the area of Esplegares (Guadalajara). According to Carlos Engel, he would also have commanded the 56th Mixed Brigade, reserve unit of the Army of Extremadura.3 In the spring of 1938 he was appointed commander of the 63rd Mixed Brigade, acting on the Levante front and in the Extremadura front; the unit sustained heavy fighting on both fronts.4 On the Extremadura front the 63rd mixed brigade participated in various operations during the year 1938. Brunete
Brunete () is a town located on the outskirts of Madrid, Spain with a population of 10,730 people. History There was no military garrison in Brunete and there was no rebel attempt to seize the city during the coup of July 1936. Brunete remained in the deep rear of the front, in the summer established in Sierra de Guadarrama, some 20 km to the north. The Nationalist 7. Division approached the city in mid-October 1936, and on October 18 the Republican government declared Brunete within ''zona de guerra''. There was no major fighting reported before on November 1, 1936 the Nationalist troops seized Brunete. A military reserve, active reserve, reserve formation, or simply reserve, is a group of military personnel or units that is initially not committed to a battle by its commander, so that it remains available to address unforeseen situations or exploit sudden opportunities.
