65 Cybele
65 Cybele is one of the largest asteroids in the Solar System. It is located in the outer asteroid belt. It is thought to be a remnant primordial body. It gives its name to the Cybele group of asteroids that orbit outward from the Sun from the 2:1 orbital resonance with Jupiter. The X-type asteroid has a relatively short rotation period of 6.0814 hours. It was discovered by Wilhelm Tempel in 1861, and named after Cybele, the earth goddess. Discovery and naming ''Cybele'' was discovered on 8 March 1861, by German astronomer Wilhelm Tempel from the Marseilles Observatory in southeastern France. A minor controversy arose from its naming process. Tempel had awarded the honour of naming the asteroid to Carl August von Steinheil in recognition of his achievements in telescope production. An occultation is an event that occurs when one object is hidden from the observer by another object that passes between them. 64 Angelina is an asteroid from the central region of the asteroid belt, approximately 50 kilometers in diameter. It is an unusually bright form of E-type asteroid. Discovery and naming Angelina was discovered on March 4, 1861, by a prolific comet discoverer, E. W. Tempel, observing from Marseille, France. It was the first of his five asteroid discoveries. The naming of Angelina caused some controversy. It was chosen by Benjamin Valz, director of the Marseille Observatory, in honour of the astronomical station of that name operated by Baron Franz Xaver von Zach on the mountains above the city. 45 Eugenia is a large asteroid of the asteroid belt. It is famed as one of the first asteroids to be found to have a moon orbiting it. It was also the second triple asteroid to be discovered, after 87 Sylvia. Discovery Eugenia was discovered on 27 June 1857 by the Franco–German amateur astronomer Hermann Goldschmidt. His instrument of discovery was a 4-inch aperture telescope located in his sixth floor apartment in the 6th Arrondissement of Paris. It was the forty-fifth minor planet to be discovered. Carl August von Steinheil (12 October 1801 – 14 September 1870) was a German physicist, inventor, engineer and astronomer. Biography Steinheil was born in RibeauvillĂ©, Alsace. He studied law in Erlangen since 1821. He then studied astronomy in Göttingen and Königsberg. He continued his studies in astronomy and physics while living in his father's manor in Perlachseck near Munich. From 1832 to 1849, Steinheil was professor for mathematics and physics at the University of Munich. In July 1839, Steinheil demonstrated a photographic process at Nymphenburg Palace in the presence of Queen Therese. Several photographs had been exhibited by Steinheil throughout April and Summer 1839. Marseille Observatory () is an astronomical observatory located in Marseille, France, with a history that goes back to the early 18th century.
