5th Queens
5th Queens was an electoral district in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, which elected two members to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1873 to 1993. The district was also known as Charlottetown Common until 1939. Until 1966, the district comprised the entire city of Charlottetown. For that year's provincial election, the district was split, and 5th Queens comprised the eastern half of the city for the remainder of its existence. The western half of Charlottetown became the new district of 6th Queens. The district was abolished in 1996 into Charlottetown-Kings Square, Parkdale-Belvedere, Sherwood-Hillsborough Sherwood-Hillsborough was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, Canada. 6th Queens was an electoral district in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, which elected two members to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1966 to 1993. Benjamin Rogers (politician, Born 1836)
Benjamin Rogers (September 1, 1836 – January 21, 1911) was a merchant and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented 5th Queens in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1893 to 1900 as a Liberal member. Born in Kintleth, Carmarthenshire, Wales, the son of Jonah Rogers and Hannah Thomas, he came to Bedeque, Prince Edward Island with his parents in 1839 and was educated there. In 1854, he moved to Charlottetown where he partnered Thomas W. Dodd in a wholesale and retail hardware business, eventually becoming sole owner. In 1866, he married Mary L. Trenaman. Rogers was also a director of the P.E.I. Telephone Company. Patrick Blake (Canadian Politician)
Patrick Blake (March 6, 1846 – November 20, 1909) was a businessman and politician in Prince Edward Island, Canada. He represented 5th Queens in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1883 to 1891 as a Conservative member. He was born in Charlottetown as the son of John Blake, an Irish immigrant. With his brother Maurice, he became a partner in his father's butchering business, later expanding into exporting cattle and wholesale. Blake served on Charlottetown City Council from 1880 to 1882. Blake was speaker for the provincial assembly from 1890 to 1891. He was opposed to Confederation but ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons in 1891. Blake was a judge and later director for the provincial agricultural exhibition. He helped reorganize the Charlottetown Board of Trade and served as president from 1893 to 1896. Neil McLeod (politician)
Neil McLeod (December 15, 1842 – October 19, 1915) was a Prince Edward Island lawyer, judge, politician, the fifth premier, and Leader of the Opposition during the amalgamation of the Prince Edward Island legislature. He was born at Uigg on the island to Roderick McLeod and Flora McDonald, Baptist immigrants from the Isle of Skye in Scotland. He was educated at the Uigg Grammar School and in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, articled in law at Charlottetown and was called to the bar in 1873. Four years later, his marriage to the beloved Isabella Jane Adelia Hayden, the Methodist granddaughter to Irish Roman Catholic immigrant and merchant John Roach Bourke, furthered Gaelic intersections among Islander cultural enclaves. McLeod was the child of immigrants from the Isle of Skye and transcriptions identified him as both "Neil McLeod" and "Neil MacLeod," in publications as well as legal documents, after the 1886 election of Angus MacLeod.
