5th Northern Ireland Assembly
This is a list of the members of the fifth Northern Ireland Assembly, the unicameral devolved legislature of Northern Ireland. Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) elected on 5 May 2016 or subsequently co-opted are listed by party and by constituency. Only the Democratic Unionist Party, Sinn Féin and an Independent Unionist participated in the 4th Northern Ireland Executive, which now comprised nine rather than 12 departments. Northern Ireland Assembly
The Northern Ireland Assembly (; ), often referred to by the metonym ''Stormont'', is the devolved unicameral legislature of Northern Ireland. It has power to legislate in a wide range of areas that are not explicitly reserved to the Parliament of the United Kingdom, and to appoint the Northern Ireland Executive. It sits at Parliament Buildings at Stormont in Belfast. The Assembly is a unicameral, democratically elected body comprising 90 members known as members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Members are elected under the single transferable vote form of proportional representation (STV-PR). In turn, the Assembly selects most of the ministers of the Northern Ireland Executive using the principle of power-sharing under the D'Hondt method to ensure that Northern Ireland's largest voting blocs, British unionists and Irish nationalists, both participate in governing the region. Sinn Féin
Sinn Féin ( ; ; ) is an Irish republican and democratic socialist political party active in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The History of Sinn Féin, original Sinn Féin organisation was founded in 1905 by Arthur Griffith. Its members founded the revolutionary Irish Republic and its parliament, the First Dáil, and many of them were active in the Irish War of Independence, during which the party was associated with the Irish Republican Army (1919–1922). East Londonderry (Assembly Constituency)
East Londonderry is a constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly. The seat was first used for a Northern Ireland-only election for the Northern Ireland Forum in 1996. Since 1998, it has elected members to the current Assembly. Maurice Bradley
Maurice Bradley (born 5 April 1954) is a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) politician, serving as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Londonderry since 2016. Bradley is the DUP's policing spokesperson. He was previously a Coleraine Councillor for the Coleraine East DEA from 1994 to 2014. Career Bradley was first elected to Coleraine Borough Council in a 1994 by-election, representing the Coleraine East District, and was subsequently re-elected in 2001. At the 2003 Northern Ireland Assembly election, he was one of three DUP candidates standing in East Londonderry, though Bradley himself was not elected. He was re-elected as a Councillor in the 2005 local elections. Bradley served twice as mayor of Coleraine, firstly between 2007-2008 and later between 2011 and 2012. Upper Bann is a constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly. The seat was first used for a Northern Ireland-only election for the Northern Ireland Forum in 1996. Since 1998, it has elected members to the current Assembly. Sydney Anderson (Northern Ireland Politician)
Alderman Sydney Alexander Anderson (born 23 April 1949) is a former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) politician who was an Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Councillor for the Portadown DEA from 2019 to 2023. He previously served as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Upper Bann from 2010 to 2017. Career Anderson was elected to Craigavon Borough Council as an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) representative for the Portadown DEA in the 2001 Council election. Anderson resigned from the UUP ahead of the 2003 Northern Ireland Assembly election, and stood as an independent candidate in Upper Bann, polling 581 votes (1.34%). Before the 2005 local elections, he joined the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). He retained his council seat in that election. The role of official Opposition (parliamentary), opposition in the Northern Ireland Assembly can be taken by larger political parties who do not participate in Northern Ireland's consociational power-sharing Northern Ireland Executive, Executive. The Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) is a unionist political party in Northern Ireland. In common with all other Northern Irish unionist parties, the TUV's political programme has as its '' sine qua non'' the preservation of Northern Ireland's place within the United Kingdom. People Before Profit (, PBP) is a Trotskyist political party formed in October 2005. The party is active in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Alliance Party Of Northern Ireland
The Alliance Party of Northern Ireland (APNI), or simply Alliance, is a liberal and centrist political party in Northern Ireland. Following the 2022 Northern Ireland Assembly election, it was the third-largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, holding seventeen seats. It broke through by achieving third place in first preference votes in the 2019 European Parliament election and polling third-highest regionally at the 2019 UK general election. Social Democratic And Labour Party
The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP; ) is a social democratic and Irish nationalist political party in Northern Ireland. The SDLP currently has eight members in the Northern Ireland Assembly ( MLAs) and two members of Parliament (MPs) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. The SDLP party platform advocates Irish reunification and, pending the unity of all the people of Ireland and while the northern jurisdiction remains part of the United Kingdom, further devolution of powers. It is a sister party of the UK Labour Party, which maintains an electoral pact with the SDLP not to stand candidates in Northern Ireland but to support SDLP candidates instead.
