5 Series
The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972. It is the successor to the BMW New Class#New Class Sedans, BMW New Class sedans and is currently in its eighth generation. The car is sold as either a sedan (car), sedan or, since 1991, a station wagon (marketed as "Touring"). A 5-door fastback (marketed as "Gran Turismo") was sold between 2009 and 2017. Each successive generation has been given an internal ''G-code'' designation since 2017. Previously, a ''F-code'' designation was used between 2010 and 2016, while an ''E-code'' designation was used between 1972 and 2010. These are used to distinguish each model and generation from each other. Executive car is a British term for a large car, and is considered equivalent to the European E-segment and American full-size classifications. Executive cars are larger than compact executive cars (and the non-luxury equivalent mid-size cars), but smaller than luxury saloons / full-size luxury sedans. The term has also been adopted by Euro NCAP, a European organization founded to test car safety. BMW 528 (E12) – Heckansicht, 22
The BMW E12 is the first generation of 5 Series executive cars, which was produced from 1972 to 1981 and replaced the saloon models of the BMW New Class range. Initial models were powered by inline-four engines, using either a carburettor or fuel-injection. A year after launch, the first model powered by a straight-six engine was introduced. By the final years of E12 production, most models used a straight-six engine. There was no M5 model for the E12, however the E12 M535i is considered to be the predecessor to the M5. The E24 6 Series coupés were built on the E12 platform up until 1982. The E12 was replaced by the E28 5 Series in 1981, although the tools were sent to South Africa where E12 assembly continued (with E28 interiors) until 1984. IDrive
iDrive is an in-car communications and entertainment system, used to control most secondary vehicle systems in late-model BMW cars. It was launched in 2001, first appearing in the E65 7 Series. The system unifies an array of functions under a single control architecture consisting of an LCD panel mounted on the dashboard and a control knob mounted on the center console. iDrive introduced the first multiplexed MOST Bus/ Byteflight optical fiber data busses with a very high bit rate in a production vehicle. BMW S62
BMW M62 is a naturally aspirated engine, naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine which was produced from 1995 to 2005. A successor to the BMW M60, the M62 features an aluminium engine block and a single row timing chain. In 1998, a technical update included VANOS (variable valve timing) for the intake camshafts. A BMW M high performance version of the M62, called the S62 engine, was fitted to BMW's BMW M5#E39, E39 M5 and BMW Z8, and both the Ascari KZ1 and Ascari A10. BMW M88
The BMW M88 is a straight-6 DOHC petrol engine which was produced from 1978 to 1989. It is based on the DOHC version of the BMW M49 engine, which was used in the BMW 3.0CSi racing cars.
