55th Military Airlift Squadron
The 55th Aeromedical Airlift Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. It was first activated during World War II as the 55th Ferrying Squadron. It deployed to Canada and managed a station on the ALSIB ferrying route. The squadron was reconstituted in July 1952 as the 55th Air Transport Squadron. It flew strategic airlift missions from Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, then from Travis Air Force Base, California until inactivating in 1960 when its Boeing C-97 Stratofreighters were retired. It was activated again in Germany early in 1966 as the 55th Military Airlift Squadron. After assuming the primary role of aeromedical evacuation, it was redesignated the 55th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron and remained the primary aeromedical airlift unit in Europe until inactivating in 1993. C-9A Nightingale
The McDonnell Douglas C-9 is a retired military version of the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 airliner. It was produced as the C-9A Nightingale for the United States Air Force, and the C-9B Skytrain II for the United States Navy, U.S. Navy and United States Marine Corps, Marine Corps. The final flight of the C-9A Nightingale was in September 2005, and the C-9C was retired in September 2011. The U.S. Navy retired its last C-9B in July 2014. The two remaining C-9s in Marine service were retired in April 2017. Despite being officially retired, one C-9B, BuNo 161529, was seen as late as November 2020 being operated by the United States Air Force, U.S. Air Force as an experimental sensor testbed. Douglas C-118 Liftmaster
The Douglas DC-6 is a piston-powered airliner and cargo aircraft built by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1946 to 1958. Originally intended as a military transport near the end of World War II, Douglas reworked it after the war to compete with the Lockheed Constellation in the long-range commercial transport market. Douglas built over 700, and many still fly in cargo, military, and wildfire control roles. Rhein-Main Air Base was a United States Air Force air base near the city of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It was a Military Airlift Command (MAC) and United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) installation, occupying the south side of Frankfurt Airport. Its military airport codes are discontinued. The 1501st Air Transport Wing is an inactive United States Air Force unit, being inactivated on 8 January 1966. The 1501st Air Transport Wing was a heavy cargo transport wing of the Military Air Transport Service (MATS), formed on 1 June 1948. The unit was originally designated as the 530th Air Transport Wing and assigned to the MATS Pacific Division. The wing was stationed at Travis Air Force Base, California. Its last was assigned to the Continental Division, Military Air Transport Service, stationed at Kelly Air Force Base, Texas. It was inactivated on 1 May 1957.
