The International 505 is a One-Design high-performance two-person monohull planing sailing dinghy, with spinnaker, utilising a Trapeze (Dinghy Gear), trapeze for the crew. History The origins of the class began in 1953 with the creation of the 18-foot 'Coronet (dinghy), Coronet' dinghy designed by John Westell. This sailboat competed in the International Sailing Federation, International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU) selection trials at La Baule-Escoublac, La Baule, France, in 1953 for a new two-person performance dinghy for the Olympic Games, Olympics. Although the Coronet lost Olympic selection to the Flying Dutchman, in 1954 the :fr:Caneton (bateau), Caneton Association of France asked Westell to modify his design to create for them a 5-metre performance dinghy that would be suitable to their needs. John Westell
John Westell (11 March 1921 – January 1989) was an English sailboat designer, who is noted for designing the 505 sailing dinghy and the Ocean Bird class of trimarans. Westell also designed cruising sailboats. Biography Born Woodroffe John Westell on 11 March 1921 in Devon, England, Westell dropped the use of "Woodroffe" in his name, which was a reference to his ancestry. By age 16, he was a champion dinghy racer. In 1939, he volunteered for the Royal Navy Reserve and helped deliver a Bird-class minesweeper to the New Zealand Navy. He returned to become a sub-lieutenant and train as a meteorologist. During World War II, he was posted to a naval air station in Ceylon (which became Sri Lanka in 1972). After the war, he returned to England, married and became a father by 1950. He raced International 14 sailboats and co-founded the magazine, ''Yachts and Yachting''. A burgee is a distinguishing flag, regardless of its shape, of a recreational boating organization. In most cases, they have the shape of a pennant. Etiquette Yacht clubs and their members may fly their club's burgee while under way and at anchor, day or night. Sailing vessels may fly the burgee either from the main masthead or from a halyard under the lowermost starboard spreader. Most powerboats (i.e. those lacking any mast or having a single mast) fly the burgee off a short staff at the bow; two-masted power vessels fly the burgee at the foremast. A spar is a pole of wood, metal or lightweight materials such as carbon fibre used in the rigging of a sailing vessel to carry or support its sail. These include yards, booms, and masts, which serve both to deploy sail and resist compressive and bending forces, as well as the bowsprit and spinnaker pole. In larger vessels during the age of sail, spare spars could be roped together to provide a temporary surface known as a "spar deck". In British heraldry, a coronet is a type of crown that is a mark of rank of non-reigning members of the royal family and peers. La Baule-Escoublac (; Gallo: ''Écoubiâ'', , ), commonly referred to as La Baule, is a commune in Loire-Atlantique, a department in Pays de la Loire, western France. History Seaside resort In 1879, when the Saint-Nazaire- Croisic railroad was conceived by Parisian industrialist Jules-Joseph Hennecart that the tourist potential of the coast was recognised. Just before the inauguration of the line, Hennecart bought 40 ha of dunes for the Society of Escoublac Dunes (Société des dunes d'Escoublac) and commissioned local architect Georges Lafont to design the new town. Lafont designed a long sand promenade named Avenue de la Gare (today Avenue du Général-de-Gaulle) and a chapel (see picture).
