4th Combat Engineer Regiment, Royal Australian Engineers
4th Combat Engineer Regiment (4 CER) was an Australian Army Reserve engineer regiment based at East Ringwood, Victoria. Raised on 1 July 1995, upon formation, the regiment consisted of the 10th and 35th Field Squadrons and the 38th Support Squadron. It is an Australian Army Reserve, Army Reserve unit that provides engineering support to the 4th Brigade (Australia), 4th Brigade, and played a pivotal role in the ADF support to the 2003 Victorian Alpine Fires and the 2009 Black Saturday Fires. Throughout 2009, the regiment also contributed personnel to operations overseas, including deployments to Afghanistan and the Sinai; other personnel took part were detached to Rifle Company Butterworth and Operation Resolute. The Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) is the military engineering corps of the Australian Army. The RAE is ranked fourth in seniority of the corps of the Australian Army, behind the Corps of Staff Cadets, Staff Cadets, Royal Australian Armoured Corps, Armoured and Royal Australian Artillery, Artillery Corps. 4th Brigade (Australia)
The 4th Brigade is a brigade-level formation of the Australian Army. Originally formed in 1912 as a Militia formation, the brigade was re-raised for service during World War I, elements of the brigade served at Gallipoli and in the trenches on the Western Front before being disbanded in 1919. In 1921, the brigade was re-raised as a unit of Australia's part-time military forces, based in the state of Victoria. During World War II the brigade served in the New Guinea and New Britain campaigns. Unit colour patches (or simply known as colour patches) are a method of identification used by the Australian Army, used to indicate which unit a soldier belongs to. It is believed that the Australian system of colour patches is based upon the small patches of colours or tartan worn on the wikt:puggaree, puggarees of the pith helmets of members of a number of British Army units during the Second Boer War, the South African War of 1899–1902.
