''Four-Mations'' was a regular animation strand broadcast in the United Kingdom on Channel 4 in the 1990s. The series featured short animated films, tributes, and sometimes a documentary on animation. The series was notable for co-financing some films and broadcasting animated films from around the world. The series was first broadcast in 1990 and finished in 1998. In 2008 a website made for people to upload, view and share animated films and games 4mations, borrowing the 4 Mation title. Animation
Animation is a filmmaking technique whereby still images are manipulated to create moving images. In traditional animation, images are drawn or painted by hand on transparent celluloid sheets to be photographed and exhibited on film. Animation has been recognised as an artistic medium, specifically within the entertainment industry. Many animations are either traditional animations or computer animations made with computer-generated imagery (CGI). Stop motion animation, in particular claymation, has continued to exist alongside these other forms. Animation is contrasted with live action, although the two do not exist in isolation. Many moviemakers have produced films that are a hybrid of the two. ''Springman and the SS'' () is a 1946 Czechoslovak superhero animated short film directed by Jiří Trnka featuring Pérák, the Spring Man of Prague. The film is also known as ''The Chimney Sweep'' in the United States. The film competed at 1946 Cannes Film Festival. Plot A chimney sweep disguises as a Spring-heeled Jack-like figure during the Nazi occupation. The heroic and mischievous black-clad "Springer", with a mask fashioned out of a sock and defying the curfew, is capable of performing fantastic leaps due to having couch springs attached to his shoes. He taunts the occupying German army sentries and the Gestapo before escaping in a surrealistic, slapstick chase across the darkened city. The Smurfs
''The Smurfs'' (; ) is a Belgian comic franchise centered on a fictional colony of small, blue, humanoid creatures who live in mushroom-shaped houses in the forest. ''The Smurfs'' was created and introduced as a series of comic characters by the Belgian comics artist Peyo (the pen name of Pierre Culliford) in 1958, wherein they were known as ''Les Schtroumpfs''. There are more than 100 Smurf characters, and their names are based on adjectives that emphasise their characteristics, such as "Jokey Smurf", who likes to play practical jokes on his fellow Smurfs. "Smurfette" was the first female Smurf to be introduced in the series. The Smurfs wear Phrygian caps, which came to represent freedom during the modern era. ''Yellow Submarine'' (also known as ''The Beatles: Yellow Submarine'') is a 1968 animated jukebox musical fantasy adventure comedy film inspired by the music of the Beatles, directed by animation producer George Dunning, and produced by United Artists and King Features Syndicate. ''Ghibli Experimental Theater On Your Mark'' ( Japanese: ジブリ実験劇場 On Your Mark, Hepburn: ''Jiburi Jikkengekijō On Yua Māku'') is an animated music video created by Studio Ghibli for the song " On Your Mark" (also released in English as "Castles in the Air") by the Japanese rock duo Chage and Aska . The song was released in 1994 as part of the single "Heart". In 1995, Hayao Miyazaki wrote and directed the short film for the song as a side-project after having writer's block with '' Princess Mononoke''. The anime music video is non-linear, providing multiple reiterations and alternate scenes to depict the events. The music video added sound effects to the audio track, but contains no dialogue. Miyazaki purposely misinterpreted the lyrics to present his vision of a world where the surface becomes inhospitable and humans live in an underground city. were a Japanese popular music duo composed of male singer-songwriters from Fukuoka Prefecture: and . To date they have sold over 31 million albums and singles in Japan. History They were formed in the late 1970s at the suggestion of the A&R division of the Yamaha Music Foundation. After the hit single " (Banri no Kawa)" in 1980, they produced several hits irregularly throughout the 1980s. Phil Mulloy
Phil Mulloy (born 29 August 1948) is an Irish-English animator. He was born in Wallasey, Merseyside and studied both painting and filmmaking. Mulloy worked as a screenwriter and director of live-action films until the late 1980s before becoming an animator. His animations have been described as "satirical grotesque" and often portray the dark side of human nature and contemporary social, political, and religious values in a humorous and at times, shocking way. His visual style is distinctive in its use of primitive, often skeletal figures and minimalist backgrounds. ''Alf, Bill and Fred'' is a 1964 short animated film directed by Bob Godfrey and written by Stan Hayward. Summary The plot and the moral are both very simple. The three titular multi-species characters are friends who like to bounce a lot. Bill - the man - suddenly inherits a lot of money and starts spending it with reckless abandon (on, amongst other things, a tin of peaches). He abandons his old friends and becomes increasingly hedonistic. Meanwhile, the dog and the duck continue bouncing. Eventually, Bill accidentally bounces out of a window in a very tall building. He loses his memory and goes back to his old friends. They set up a business together selling happiness to people. ''The Killing of an Egg'' ( Dutch title ''Ei om Zeep'', literally "Egg for Soap") is an animated short directed by Paul Driessen and produced by Nico Crama in the Netherlands in 1977. Synopsis The film starts with a bald, obese man in a bright yellow shirt preparing to eat breakfast, a soft-boiled egg. As he taps the shell with his spoon, a voice (in heavily accented English) says "Hey, who is it?" As the man continues to tap, it becomes clear the voice is coming from the egg. The man continues tapping away over the egg's protests, ultimately sadistically crushing the egg with his hands. He has no sooner stopped than he hears a tapping from outside his home.
