40th Manitoba Legislature
The 40th Manitoba Legislature was created following a general election in 2011. The New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Greg Selinger formed a majority government. Following the election, Hugh McFadyen of the Progressive Conservative Party stepped down as Leader of the Opposition. Brian Pallister became Progressive Conservative party leader and Leader of the Opposition in September 2012. The Lieutenant Governor was Philip S. Lee until 2015, then Janice Filmon. Daryl Reid
Daryl Gary Reid, (born November 2, 1950) is a former politician in Manitoba, Canada. He represented the electoral division of Transcona in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1990 to 2016, serving as a member of the New Democratic Party, and was the speaker of the Legislative Assembly from October 2011 to March 2016. Early life and career Reid was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to a family that was politically active with the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation and New Democratic Party. He began working for Canadian National in 1969 and became active in the trade union movement, serving as a shop steward and executive board member for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Brandon West (Manitoba Riding)
Brandon West is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It encompasses half of the City of Brandon, the other half being represented in Brandon East. History of the riding The original riding of Brandon West existed from 1886 to 1888, after the city and riding of Brandon was divided into two electoral divisions. It was eliminated in 1888, when the city became a single division again. The modern riding of Brandon West was created in 1968, when the City of Brandon was again divided into two electoral districts. It was formally brought into being in the provincial election of 1969. Portage La Prairie (Manitoba Riding)
Portage la Prairie is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It has existed since the province's creation in 1870. Portage la Prairie is located in southern Manitoba. It is bordered to the north by Lake Manitoba, to the south by Carman, to the west by Turtle Mountain, and to the east by Lakeside and Morris. Portage la Prairie itself is in the central part of the riding. Other communities in the riding include Oakville, Newton, St. Marks, and Dakota Plains Wahpeton First Nation. Lakeside (Manitoba Riding)
Lakeside is a provincial electoral division in Manitoba, Canada. It is located to the immediate northwest of the city of Winnipeg. Traditionally a rural riding, Lakeside has become more urban in recent years (as a result of both electoral redistribution and changes in demography). All the same, agriculture accounted for 17 per cent of the riding's industry in 1999. The riding is bordered to the north by Interlake, to the west by Portage la Prairie, to the south by Morris and to the east by Gimli. It also borders the city of Winnipeg to the southeast. Selkirk is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 1957 from part of St. Andrews, and has formally existed since the provincial election of 1958. It is named after the city of Selkirk, which in turn was named for Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk, who set up the Red River Colony colonization project in 1811. Selkirk is bordered to the east by Lac Du Bonnet, to the south by Springfield, to the west by Gimli, and to the north by Lake Winnipeg. Most of the riding's population is located in the city of Selkirk. Spruce Woods is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 2008 out of parts of Minnedosa and Turtle Mountain and notably gained parts of the City of Brandon and Arthur-Virden in the 2018 redistribution. Following the 2018 redistribution, Spruce Woods includes the municipalities of Cornwallis, Elton, Glenboro – South Cypress, Oakland – Wawanesa, Riverdale, Sifton, Souris – Glenwood, Victoria, Whitehead and the portion of the City of Brandon located north of the Assiniboine River. Kildonan (Manitoba Riding)
Kildonan was a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The boundaries for the riding maintained their location through the 2008 redistribution. History Kildonan riding (1870–1899) The original Kildonan riding was created at the time of the province's establishment in 1870. It was dominated by Manitoba's "old settler" population (i.e., English-speaking families who had lived in the Red River Settlement for many years before the province's creation). There was a large "mixed blood" aboriginal population in the riding, and many of its residents were also of Scottish or partly Scottish ancestry. From 1886 to 1888, the riding was incorporated into "Kildonan and St. Paul" riding. Kildonan was a hotly contested riding between the Conservatives and Liberals following the establishment of party government in 1888.
