34 Field Regiment (India)
34 Field Regiment (Cassino II) is part of the Regiment of Artillery of the Indian Army. History Formation The Regiment was raised as the 8th Battalion of the Fifth Maratha Light Infantry at Belgaum on February 1, 1941 under Lt Col LCM Bellamy, MC. During World War II, the regiment participated in a number of battles as 4 Maratha Anti Tank Regiment initially in Iraq and Egypt. It played a decisive role in the Italian Campaign against the Germans in Battle of Cassino in the 'Lir Valley Operation' theatre from 11-13 May 1944 which earned them the coveted Honour title of “Cassino-II” and one DSO, Two Military Cross and many other Gallantry medals. The Battle of Monte Cassino, also known as the Battle for Rome, was a series of four military assaults by the Allies of World War II, Allies against Nazi Germany, German forces in Kingdom of Italy, Italy during the Italian Campaign (World War II), Italian Campaign of World War II. The objective was to break through the Winter Line and facilitate an advance towards Rome. In the beginning of 1944, the western half of the Winter Line was anchored by German forces holding the Rapido (river), Rapido-Gari (river), Gari, Liri, and Garigliano valleys and several surrounding peaks and ridges. The Soviet 160 mm mortar M1943 is a smoothbore breech loading heavy mortar which fired a bomb. The M1943 (also called the MT-13) was one of the heaviest mortar used by Soviet troops in World War II. Around 535 of these weapons were fielded with Soviet forces during the war. It was replaced in Soviet service after World War II by the M-160 mortar of the same caliber. Description Originally a simple scaling-up of the M1938 mortar, it soon became apparent that drop-loading a bomb into a long tube would be too difficult for any man to do. The 130 mm towed field gun M-46 () is a manually loaded, towed 130 mm artillery piece, manufactured in the Soviet Union in the 1950s. It was first observed by the West in 1954. For many years, the M-46 was one of the longest range artillery pieces in existence, with a range of more than (unassisted) and (assisted). Design history The order was given in April 1946 to design a "duplex" artillery piece to replace the obsolete 122 mm gun M1931/37 (A-19), 152 mm howitzer-gun M1937 (ML-20) and other World War II era field guns, such as 122 mm Model 1931, 152 mm Model 1910/30, 152 mm Model 1935 (BR-2). The new pieces, designed by the Motovilikha Plants, factory No 172 (MOTZ), shared the same carriage and were given the designators M-46 (130 mm) and M-47 (152 mm). Formation The division was formed when the 31st Indian Armoured Division was re-designated on 1 September 1945.
