33rd Primetime Emmy Awards
The 33rd Primetime Emmy Awards were held on Sunday, September 13, 1981. The ceremony was broadcast on CBS. It was hosted by Shirley MacLaine and Edward Asner. For the third consecutive year, the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series went to ''Taxi.'' The top show on the drama side was ''Hill Street Blues'' which, in its first season, tied the record for most major nominations (14) and wins (6) by a non-miniseries. NBC's ratings juggernaut ''Shōgun'' received eight major nominations, but only won one, for Outstanding Limited Series. The Pasadena Convention Center is a convention center in Pasadena, California, United States. It consists of three buildings. ''Playing for Time'' is a 1980 CBS television film, written by Arthur Miller and based on musician Fania Fénelon's autobiography ''The Musicians of Auschwitz''. Vanessa Redgrave stars as Fénelon. ''Playing for Time'' was based on Fénelon's experience as a female prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp, where she and a group of classical musicians were spared in return for performing music for their captors. The film was later adapted as a play by Miller. This was the last film of director Daniel Mann. Parts of the film were directed by Joseph Sargent, but only Mann was credited as director. This is a list of the winners of the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Made for Television Movie, which has been awarded since 1992. The category was originally called Outstanding Drama or Comedy Special. In 1991, Outstanding Drama or Comedy Special category was merged with Outstanding Miniseries category to form Outstanding Drama or Comedy Special and Miniseries and the number of nominations increased from five to six. For this year, two miniseries had competed with four "made for television movies". The following year, 1992, the new category was split to re-form the Outstanding Miniseries and Outstanding Made for Television Movie categories. In 2011, the category was merged with the Outstanding Limited Series category to create the Outstanding Miniseries or Movie category. However, in 2014, the decision was reversed, and the separate Miniseries and Television Movie categories were reinstated.
